What mic's are "always on the stand"

All of them, but I get my mic stands wholesale, and the humidity in Minnesota indoors in the winter is lower than in Death Valley. :) I have to humidify to keep my guitars and mics from dying.

Oops, didn't know that. Anyway, you can get Panasonic measurement capsules (20-20,000 Hz +/- 2 dB) pretty cheap @ about $3 apiece. In Germany they're sold via Monacor as "MCE 2000". I'm sure you can get them in the States, too, probably under a different parts number.

Anyway, I like PZM mics on accoustic guitar, and I find them useful to have around all the time. As my home-built PZMs are phantom powered, unlike the Radio Shacks, I don't have to mess around with batteries anymore :D

I keep a pair of Rode Nt3's on the stands, as they are generally setup as overheads. When not in use I put the little zipper bag over it and zip it up as far as it will go. I don't have much of a problem with humidity.

My V67G is my main mic, and WAS always on the stand. No longer. My wife knocked the stand over the other night; it hit the floor and made a small dint in the gold screen.

Damn.

My 17-month old granddaughter pulled down my Baby Bottle, 421 and MK-319 the other day, about a 4 foot fall. No visible damage, but only using them again will tell.

It was my fault anyhow. Plus...

...she's worth a thousand mics!;)

No way you could get mad at that my friend.

I don't keep my mics up for the reasons already mentioned, but my TLM-103 and a pair of MXL-603's are always just inside the closet, ready to be set up and used within minutes. For really quick "notepad" sessions, I just plug my guitar directly in and record.

Well, Stephen Paul still has my two V67Gs, so they're not up. In the big studio, we keep the Neumann TLM103 up all the time, both of the SM7s, and either a pair of 603s or the Oktava MC012s. Lately, we've had the Marshall V69 up a lot. Alex has been using the Studio Projects B1 and C3 on guitar cabinets lately, so they tend to stay up all the time too.

In the small studio, I keep a pair of 603s up, and one of the SM7s (if I can grab it out of the big studio).

What microphone preamplifier lives with your Neumann TLM103 most of the time? Thanks

For most things we do (in both studios), we usually just run thru the board preamps (Topaz 32x8 in the small room, and MCI 56x32 in the big room). Our outboard pres get more of a workout as DIs than they get as pres. For certain vocal characteristics, we will go to our high dollar stuff if the boards aren't cutting it.

Yeah... try leaving a good condenser mic out in a humid room.......

Simple guideline, if the mic's worth anything more than a 57 (especially condensers), put it back in the case (along with the dessicating gelpaks) where it belongs.

Agree totally Bear... Humidity causes shorts from the plate voltage causing crackles and pops, or total failure. If that happens to anyone out there, put it under a 100 watt light bulb for four or five hours to dry it up.

Thank you Harvey.

And thanks for the 100W light bulb advice Alan.

gelpack?

Hey BlueBear! Where do I get a dessicating gelpak?

Sounds like I need a few.

Thanks!

Well, my little studio tends to be used more for a live band situation, as we get together 1ce a week, and jam...and I record all of that. For the past 2 years, the equipment has pretty much stayed put, so there's always SM57's, MK012's, an SM58 and a variety of other Dynamics on the stands.

In regards to mic's and humidity, what humidity level (percent %) should the studio humidity be kept under?

I like that big foam ball that Alan ships with the C-1. I put that puppy on if I am leaving it up overnight. If someone knocks it over the foam will reduce the chances of damage. I wonder if anyone makes those in a variety pak.

You must have really cheap mic stands or a bunch of blind drunks in your studio or both. lol

Can anyone here help with my humidity question?

Mixxit12, they're also known as "Silica Gelpaks"...sometimes you'll find them in shoe-boxes, or with a new guitarcase... Little white sacks (about one square inch) with some 'sandlike' substance in it.
Maybe you should try going over to a sportswear store, and see if they can miss a few. I cannot imagine that they are expensive, so you might get them free.

Ah Ha

Oh, I know what those are. I thought BlueBear was referring to some magical mic dehumidifying thingy. My Wife has about a gazillion shoe boxes in our closet. I bet I can find some there. Thanks for the insight Speeddemon!
