What mic next?

At 4050

The AT 4050 is a stellar mic for the price. They are the utility mics around my place. I actually have to try not to use them, because they can do so much. Not to mention a matched pair will enable you to do some cool stereo stuff.

The AT4040 would probably be a good choice, but you might also want to consider a used AT4050, which is a bit more flexible. You might definitely consider looking at used mics that are a bit higher end than the condensors you mentioned.

Hoo boy... I have an SM7 and an AT4050. Tough choice as they are both awesome but different. On a Bjork sound, probably what others said... AT4050.. SM7 on Luther.

I'm with Harvey. I'd say ribbon. Both your vocalists sound like they would benefit from the characteristics of a ribbon mic.

The gain requirements aren't that bad with modern ribbons. The Nady RSM-2 is within a dB or so of an SM58 in terms of output level, for example. My $20/channel Peavey mixer has plenty of clean gain. If you have a relatively recent pre, you probably won't have any trouble.

I don't know anything about the pres in the 1884 or the Topaz, but I'm pretty sure the other three are more than adequate (and those two may be as well).

Now that you mention it, must be pretty recent. Used to be that they only showed the MSRP and you had to call for a price. I think I'll go spend some time on their site :D

Yeah, it must be real recent. I remember going
there about a few weeks back and it was still their
old site where I had to call for a price.

It's changed within the last week. I've been lookin at a Beyer MCE90 there. One day it's like call for the price the next I see the price online the next old page again. :D

Fullcompass went live with their buying site on monday or tuesday night. Some prices went up so you may get a better price by calling some things in, I don't know haven't tried. But yes I was qouted $314 for the SM7 couple months ago. I have my wishlist on my puter and the cheapest price next to each item. To bad they don't sell guitars.

The price they quoted me on a mic a few weeks
back is still the same. :)

Well it looks like I'm going to go with the SM7b (and really can't go wrong there). Thanks for the advice everyone.

My nearest GC has one in stock, that apparently just got put in the case as a display model in the last couple of weeks. The guy I talked to on the phone said they had a price floor of $335 on it, but that they would still honor my best price match I could print out from an authorised dealer (which Full Compass says they are).

Full Compass shopping cart shows 325.20 shipped to my door, so I think I can get that out the door at GC, which is basically the same as $300 plus 8.1% tax here. I'm probably going to pick up some more Auralex and maybe some more midi and insert cables while I'm there, so maybe I can swing a little deal on those too when all is said and done. I'll start the preamp conversation too, to show future sales are coming from me (not to mention the thousands I've spent there in the last couple of years, but I always get a competitive deal, or I go elsewhere).

I'm gonig to pass on the used Baby Bottle, as I'm a little leery of BLUE's lower end gear at the moment. If you want to know why, check out my thread in the Rack titled "Kiwi cable kills more gear!!! (was Kiwi Ate Half of My DMP-3?").

I think my next purchase will be a better preamp or channel strip, and for a next mic after that I'll be considering the 4050, KSM44, and ribbon mics (and keep my eyes peeled for deals on those in the meanwhile). It sounds like those shineybox mics with the transformers are pretty sweet for the money.

Give Full Compass a call first get there min then go to GC with that and make them pricematch.
