What kind of setup do you use to get that Waylon Jennings bass sound?

LMAO!

So "tic-tac" bass is just a palm mute.

Actually the Tic-Tac bass was a 6 string Dano, or Danelectric bass, much like a guitar but tuned like a bass. It was used to double the Upright and electric bass back in the 60's, it gave the tracks more definition.

I own and play the Fender VI or baritone bass, you can read about it here.

Carol Kaye also has a board you can talk to her and she will answer your questions, herself. Carol played the Dano on many 60's hits.

yep, that bass was out there and built for that signature sound. Although it was used and could be found with about the same abundance in numbers as a unicorn. It had a tone much like playing on a precision bass past the 12th fret. The definition was finer but it was not versatile enough to survive. The advent of amps and pickups that had capacity to efficiently and affordibly reproduce and control the mid and upper harmonics for bass(i.e. "separate tone controls"), led to the option of shelving the lower harmonics and allowing the mids and uppers to be amplified, which with a plectrum gave you that definition. That helped to sorta render the baritone as a collectors item. That, the emergence of bass as a dominant instrument with advanced playing techniques being portrayed (Motown was a kicker), and simple economy. Most people would not spend the cash to buy it, for just that sound. I`d love to own an original though.
