I have the following rack equipment -

Korg N1R
Korg Triton Rack
Mackie VLX Pro 1402 (with rack mounting brackets)

Planning on getting these in a bit -

Roland JV1010 Module
Clavia Nord Modular keyboard version

I've never used a rack before, everything is strewn around on desks around my recording computer. What kind of rack do I need to keep my modules and mixers in? Can I build one on my own? Any tips? Will the mackie mixer fit in the same rack as the Korg modules?
Thanks!

figure out how many rack spaces your gear takes up, add in a reasonable amount for gear you might buy in the near future, and then find a rack with that many spaces. Musicians Friend, zzzounds, and Mars all have cheap racks if you don't want to spend a lot of money on a rack. My eight space rack only cost my $20.

Unless your planning on transporting your rig to gigs or remote recording it's so much cheaper to build one.You can buy the pre drilled rack rails and construct a rack to your specifications.I'd recommend slanting the front of the rack as it's easier to view and tweak parameters....:D

Rack mounted equipment is standard 19" wide so if you build your own rack (which I highly recomend) the INSIDE demension should be about 19 1/8" or there abouts. You don't HAVE to by rack rails but they are nice. If you build the box out of 3/4" plywood just add a strip inside on each side as rails and will work out nicely. I've built several of these.

Nice Rack Rat!

I also built my own, but I used a customised kit to do so. The music store stapeled the woodwork together and cut the profiles of the doors to 45 degrees. The long L strips and all the other hardware were supplied with the kit. It took me 1 saturday to build it, and it saved me about 50% of the price!

Take a few minutes and look at pictures of other studios,

Then sketch a diagram of where you would like to have your equipment positioned if you could.

Purchase some 1x12 pine boards and stain them a nice color and with a few drywall screws assemble your desk, shelves and racks.

For about $50 you can really make a nice workstation.

Remember to keep your most often used equipment close within reach and the other seldom used units out of the way.

*The real key to this is the sketch! and leave a little room for new equipment as you grow.

DOM:)

There are some cool racks with a slanted top so your mackie can be mounted at an angle with your other stuff down below it.
