Addled but happy
I'm an English professor at a community college. I make close to 50k (after six years). During the semesters, the work is time-consuming. I spend many nights and weekends grading essays and so on. (We always joke that we should have gone into teaching math or history, where grading multiple-choice exams would take less time!)
We have nearly a month off for winter break and nearly three during the summer. Of course, there is plenty of planning to do during those times, but there is also a lot of time for other pursuits.
With two young children, that time is limited somewhat. Still, the end result is time, time, time. I usually work on home projects (painting, landscaping, etc.) and catch up on reading and writing (and golf!) during the summer. The last few years, I've been getting more interested in home recording. I'm still quite a newbie at it, but it's a fun hobby. Plus, it's something I can do at home while changing diapers! Record a track, change a diaper, tweak some knobs, play a game...
So...you could get a graduate degree, teach college or high school, and have summers to work on your recording. It's a long road, and the students can be a pain sometimes, but the work is rewarding in more ways than one!
Good luck, man.
