Reluctant Commander
Then And Now

A quick and dirty mix, testing a Sonar template and some new plugins.

Emily from West Virginia is singing both parts. The guitar is a bit sloppy, but it's an Ovation so what can be done...... throw in some faux ivory.....

I am no longer objective on this one, so please let me know what to do with it..... Thanks!

THEN AND NOW

smile for the pauper kiss for the king
gold for fairytales hearts for the queen
maidens and jewels castles and steeds
knights for damsels princes brave deeds

all the ages come home to me
never changes love is all we need

laugh with a jester dance for a fief
dine with a server wine for a thief
happily history life will repeat
say you will stay until my love you meet

through the ages love is all we need

hand so tender eyes so free
soulful whisper softly to be
warm like summer bird on a breeze
sun for flowers wind for the seas

all the ages come home to me
never changes love is all we need

sing like a puppy coo like a dove
bees in the honey hands in a glove
happily can you be a gift from above
say you will stay until I give my love

through the ages love is all we need

all the ages come home to me
never changes love is all we need

say you will stay
I give my love to you

Guitar (L and R)is one instrument played, same take and two mics?
Take a look , phase issues.

But...performance is fantastic, singer, guitarrist.

Emily sings beautifully on this one. I've never heard her voice better. the git is too loud for my taste. A bit of overload at about 800. Have you put the git in the Cakewalk Anyliser? I think you'll see a bit of the low mids bunching up.

The git overtakes the vocals in a few places. Em did such a nice job, you should fix that. The TTS1 has an acoustic bass that might give you some bottom when you remove the boominess of the Ovation.

That's something I thought I would never write; boominess and Ovation in the same sentence.:D

Nice work, as usual,

Wig:)

Phase issues? There is only one guitar, recorded once.

The right channel is a piano..... so not sure what you are referring to here....?

Cakewalk Anyliser? I did not know such a thing exists? I am not comprehensively versed in Sonar yet. Probably will never know everything it will do. But I do NEEEEED to analyze this Ovation sound.

Yes the Ovation is boomy. If you've only heard them on stage, then they sound bright and thin I think, but they were desigend to cut thru a mix on stage with a band. They were not designed to be mic'd. The built in piezo pups do not pickup the boominess.......but the mic does!! Yes, it has a boomy tone which I have previously analyzed (using True RTA) and found to be hitting at about 125-150. On the 2488 I always had to pull down a hard notch using the parametric at 125 to get rid of that, and it didn't hurt the overall sound too much. Haven't found that perfect eq plug yet in Sonar.

Yes it's too loud, I hear that now.....or rather, the voice is not loud enough. I will fix that shortly. THANKS!

Hey,the pan is really wide ,and piano and guitar doing almost the same thing;well, I had that out of phase 'sensation'.
Again...:rolleyes:excellent performance.

About the guitar sound, I think is more 'thin' than boomy.

soundchaser59 - I did a hard cut at 250 and it sounded much less boomy.
Yeah, less guitar, a tiny bit more piano & she'll be sweet.

Thanks, you guys confirmed it. I will remix a bit. Good suggestion on the guitar eq, I will be toying with those settings tonight. I should switch the mic also, the mic I was experimenting with is a bit too bright coming in to the preamp.

I think it was all those early Chicago albums that taught me to like the sound of guitar and piano playing the same thing. Of course, they did that trick a lot better than I do...... but I still love that sound if I can get it. ;)

This tune has been updated slightly. Less boom in the guitar by cutting between 80-150 with a narrow notch parametric. Turned it down 2 or 3 db also, and removed one of the el cheapo free plugs I was using on it. Piano came up a tiny bit, 1 or 2 db, and the voices came up at least 3 or 4 db. Changed the eq plug on the guitar bus also, took out the Kjaerhus and put in the Modern Channel. I like Kjaerhus for other things, but not much luck with it on ac guitar.

I have no clue what the "Audio Anyliser" is in Sonar, I could not find anything by that name. So I just used the graphic eq module in Ozone to view the guitar spikes. It was pretty bad between 80-150. A friend brought over his $4000 dollar Taylor and it was awesome, perfectly flat response across the spectrum! WOW! Now my Ovation will sound like crap every time I touch it.

Not sure what else to do with it, so hope it's better than it was.

I got this updated for the last time, I dont think I have the weapons or the skill to get it any better than this. So let me know if this sounds like an improvement.
