What are your Hard Drive speeds?

Im using 7200rpm.

Planning to either go with a cheap 15k 20gb scsi or 36Gb Raptor.


Quick question:

How much HD space would 32, 24/96 tracks at 4mins each take up?

I calculated about 5gbs? Am I correct or close?

I'm going to guess you're using a 2200 RPM considering this thread has been dead for 3 months. :p ;) Just giving you a hard time....

As far as your question goes, I'm not sure how to check it within your OS unless you get an outside software to tell you. There's probably a way, I'm not sure though. Otherwise, just open the computer and take a peek at the hard drive.

I also use two 10k raptors for my OS and program files, but in RAID0 rather than RAID1. Just curious BigRay, why aren't you using RAID0? I realize RAID1 is a backup, etc. but it's your program's drive, and RAID0 is so faaassstttt with the Raptors. ;)
 
Yeah, I've got one 7200 and a 5400 in my computer. I use the 7200 for everything 200 GB) and the 5400 (80 GB) for non-media things. The 7200 is a lot faster than the 5400. My buddy runs a super-gaming computer with dual Raptor drives....it's just scary. :eek:

Both my drive has 7200 RPM.

But what you now about "RAM DRIVE"?
I saw this in computermagazine, but do now where :).
It was PCI card with 4 slots DDR RAM, small battery.
4 Gb is not much, but very very fast.
I think one of my song (30-40 tracks) has never more than 4GB.
After recording copy all to HDD.

7200rpm here, I would say they are quiet, but I bet if I turned off all my fans in my computer, they would be noisy.

I just wish that I had a pc in which the hard drive's are the noise issue. :D

7200 rpm WD's. never an issue.
 
Using two internal 7200 and two external GlyphQ 250GB firewire 800. These are also 7200.
One internal for system.
One internal for samples (akustic piano, BFD, VGII and sampledisks)
One external as an audiodisk (recording and allways saving as projects. handy)
Last external I havent found a smart use for yet :rolleyes:
 
1/3 rpm...I have to crank it to get it to start, and I had to modify my house to fit the large steam pipe without filling up the place with scalding steam (ouch)
 
I'm not sure if this thread was looking for advice or not, but here's my advice: buy the slowest drive that will work reliably for you. Faster drives run hotter, and thus fail with greater frequency. They also waste power. Finally, faster drives make a lot more noise than slower drives. If you truly need a 10k drive for some reason, go for it, but the vast majority of people don't---even the vast majority of people who buy them don't need them....

For audio (even 96 kHz/24-bit at 50+ tracks), I don't recommend going higher than 7200, and I don't recommend going over 5400 unless you are using the same drive for your system drive. A typical 5400 RPM drive can simultaneously play over fifty simultaneous 96 kHz/24-bit audio tracks. For most purposes, that's plenty. :)
 
Internal 7200. I'm not sure how I know that...

But I do get new drives every year or so, and I always go for the faster ones.

Noise is additive. WD drives are the loudest drives I've used even when new, and they get louder as the bearings break down. I recommend Seagate or Hitachi in noise-sensitive environments.
 
The drive that contains all my program files is a 10,000 internal
 
Why are people bumping these 1+ year old threads?
