What is the deal with you all only recomending marshall and studio projects?

Sounds like you all are experienced engineers--I would think you would use more expensive, better quality mics...it almost seems there is an opposition to name brands.

I have been in here the last few days looking for suggestions and all I hear is MXL this SP that. What about other brands? DO THEY EXIST??

If these were such great mics I think they would be more readily available....

for newbies, what about the LD condensors.......AT30335 ($200), ksm27 ($300), nt1 ($200), C3000 ($300).

These are easy to find in actual stores, and they are world-renowned brands...I don't want to spend my hard-earned money on some crap brand that most of the industry has even heard of. And I repeat myself: if they were any good the rest of the industry would know them.

All i get in here is that is crap buy something cheaper. That makes no sense....I was looking for a reliable online recording source....I have not found it here. Here I have only found complete bias towards a couple brands...I am new at this but I know favorites vary from person to person--everyone here likes the same thing. I find that odd.

I guess I will turn to doing it the old fashioned way--finding knowledeable people (who cannot hide behind computer screens) in real stores and real recording studios to give me suggestions.

The mics you mention will work fine, but in case you haven't noticed there's a revoultion going on in the home recording industry. It's a train coming through town and you can either choose to get on it or let it pass you by.

I do not expect people to recommend anything they do not have--my point is that everyone has the same thing!

If I went to a guitar forum I don't think everyone would go tell me to buy a gremlin 90 dollar piece. But then maybe they would...

If someone asked me what kind of guitar they hsould get for 90 bucks I would say don't. save up and buy something better--here--this is what I have, and this is what I bought when I was starting. Like c7sus just did.

I don't mean to come in here as the fool who goes off on everyone in ignorance, but you would think a bb as vast as this one would have some better resources and a little more diversity...that's all I am saying.

spectre, the affordable large diaphram condenser "movement" has
effectively made us their lab rats-not that there's anything wrong with
that! The top level engineers tend not to be as hip since they're already
getting excellent results with the more expensive microphones they've
used for years and years. This tendency is changing due to their natural
inquisiveness, and the field reports of the "grunts" like myself!

P.S. For most of us these microphones are basically to learn with,
so one of the reasons Studio Projects is such a good pick is
Alan's (owner) product support. You can call or e-mail them
and they'll really help you out on a one to one basis.
And the mikes truly have a pro level sound to them IMNSHO.

And because I like you, I'm going to let you in on a secret: Studio Projects and Marshall Electronics send all of us weekly checks for our recommendations of their gear.

Seriously, you didn't know that? We're ALL getting paid REAL CHECKS anywhere in the neighborhood of $1,000 or more per week. Only problem is mine is always made out to "Chessrock" so I have a really rough time cashing it unless I go to some of the really shady Currency Exchanges. They don't give them to the dumber guys though but . . . oops. I wasn't supposed to tell you that.

But I'll tell you what, since I like and respect your brash attitude, I'm going to let you in on another secret: Everything Guitar Center sells is good. Seriously. They've got this little dude at their corporate headquarters dressed in a suit and who looks just like Yoda. He's like 1,000 years old. All the sales reps from the major mic companies go to him and if he likes their mics, then it's just a given that they're automatically good and everything else is junk.

That's why you can always spot big-name celebrities like the Smashing Pumpkins hanging out at Guitar Center all the time. They know.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: These sales reps, they know everything too. They may look kind of complacent, standing around the parking lot huffing down cigarettes and talking to their teenage-girlfriends on their cell phones . .

But did you know that that every one of them was sent to special "mic colleges." They're secret underworld education institutions where they are disciplined in mic knowlege. It's kind of like a religion, you know. Once they graduate and are good enough for Guitar Center, they generally make a lot more than doctors or lawyers. OH YEA ! Seriously bro. They just look like they're taking a vow of poverty, but let me tell you . . .

Keep in mind that the Guitar Center guys are most likely holding back on you. Seriously. Just keep mentioning things like microns, FETS, transformers, etc. and before long, they'll wipe the dumb looks off their faces (it's all just an act), pull you in back and share their innermost secrets and breadth of knowlege with you. You just have to work at it.

Guitar Center really does know everything. After all, they are big, and they have guys that work there that wear suits at their home offices. They also have secretaries and briefcases at their home offices . . . so they must have lots of marketing research, special mic labs, and knowlege that they spend like a billion dollars on right?

It's kind of like the government! They have guys in suits and all that, so they know everything too! Someday, you too will know, my friend. Some day.

Spec,whatChess said is pretty much right on.If you think the guys working at Guitar Center are a fountain of information you are saidly mistaken.If those guys haven't heard of Studio Projects that is no surprise to me.Ask them if they heard of the RNC compressor and you will get the same response.Those guys don't know their asses from their elbows.Seriously.Sometimes I think you have to take an IQ test to work at a music store and if you do well on it they won't hire you.

You wonder why people are recommending the same inexpensive products,well duh!Maybe it is because people have found these products to be the best bang for the buck out there.We could easily recommend more expensive gear but until you get your engineering skills up to snuff it wouldn't make that much of a difference in your recordings anyways.You gotta learn to walk before you can run.It is not just a matter of throwing money at the problem.You must spend the time and effort to get to know how to use the gear.When you can snatch the pebble out of my hand,little grasshopper,you will be ready.

I don't recomend either of those mics. I feel they're toys, but that's just MY humble opinion. But the fact remains, this is a HOME recording site. But Dude, you should really pick up a matched pair of ELAM-251's. They just RULE on my Applause acoustic.

Perhaps you've lurked much longer, but if you have, that fact would just increase the moron factor. Insulting the entire board isn't going to get the help that you so seek, grasshopper. Everyone here could recommend mics far superior than the MXL and SP lines, however, for most of us, we tend to stick to those within our own budgets. I would recommend that you e-mail some of the respected "pros" around here with your mic questions. That is, if you've been around long enough to know who they are.
