what if I record my band and me while driving 70mph?

Your Mother
Basically I sellotape a condenser mic to the ceiling of the van in the back, as an overhead for the drums (2001 ford transit, white, rusty) it will be my Oktava mk319 bass and guitar both plugged into the aux in port on my radio, with a splitter, and turn up the guitar and bass on the stereo on a moderate but not too loud volume, and sing loudly into the steering wheel which will have a single small diaphram condenser taped to it, pointing at me as I drive, another mic will be selotaped to the left side of the dash, towards the radio speaker. While the drummer plays in the back of the van.

The album I will record in this mannor will be called 'The Literal tour album'

What do you think? I insist that we be driving on a motorway at 70mph before we hit record on the h2. There is a wall between the front and back of the van, so the drummer will have to listen carefully as a mic cord can't go through the wall. I have a power inverter so I CAN plug in the samson 22 track mixer using a 4 way extension cord. then output that mixer to my zoom h2 as a mic input...yknow what, im gonna have to put a small hole in the wall for the mics to go through, maybe he can bring his headphones afterall, he is of course the only one who needs them.

If we survive who'd like to hear it? should I video the session? I have 3 cameras, would be perfect, il tape the tripods to the floor of the van, one on me, one on guitar and bassist, one in the back on drummer.

can't wait, we will do this on the 19th

Haha... That sounds like a great idea. I think video is the key for this one, though. The audio is probably not going to be spectacular, so the funny video is going to sell the thing if it's edited right. You should make sure to include footage of you setting it up and talking about all the problems you are expecting. That way, when they happen - we will laugh instead of scrutinize the audio. I think it's a very creative idea and would totally be down for hearing/seeing a finished product. Good luck.

Hopefully I am not driving anywhere near you - talk about "distracted driving"! Why not get a friend to drive, you can ride shotgun.

You know, back in the 70s when I was a teenager, dreaming my life away, I used to write books in my head about footballers ('B for Brentford' was one) and rock bands that took America by storm then imploded amid much acrimony and one of the stories (I can't remember if it was The Nutts or Saturday's Child) has a part where the band is travelling up north somewhere in a mobile studio and on a whim, they decide to record some songs there and then as they zoom at 70 up the motorway. The only thing that I can recall about that bit is that two of the songs they record are called "Home town Birmingham" and one that they literally make up as they go along called "Motorway one" {named after the M1), which was a crummy English take on "Route 66" (I'd just read a biography on the Rolling Stones, in all likelihood). Instead of "get your kicks on route 66", 'theirs' was "have some fun on motorway one......"

I can't wait to see tomorrows Sunderland headlines.....:laughings:

Be sure to keep the windows up or you'll need wind screens!
Is there going to be a horn or turn signal solo?:D

In a pinch you can use the windshield wipers as a metronome.:laughings:

Technically...since both the band and the mics are traveling together in the van...the 70mph would be irrelevant...it would be the same as standing still. :)

Now...if you stuck the mic on the side of the road and drove by it at 70mph while playing...you could to a live Doppler effect with your band! :D

Old ladies will pass you at 70mph. Do it at least 100mph if you want to impress anyone.

In a shitty old transit van full of equipment? please..

Why don't we aggree to drop the 70mph limit and i'll just keep my foot to the floor and see what happens

What you really need to do is;
To tell all of your friends, girlfriends, fans, groupies ,enemies etc. to be a live audience by driving all of their vehicles Along side of the van and in front and in back like a motorcade as you play and speed down the 1.

I could just start a tour in the moving van, with the doors open, call it 'The tour that Literally never stops'
Maybe it'll an 80mph tour using only 30mph roads, and ignoring traffic lights. KEEP UP
