Hey guys my name is James Benentt and I am an active reader on these forums. I've stayed quiet long enough and I thought I could share some info that might be most helpful in your quest of achieving the perfect sound at a fraction of the cost you might have been thinking about in the past. Take a look:

1. For cheapskates doing vocals I highly recommend you check out this picture:

http://www.macidol.com/assets/images/duvet-vocal-booth.jpg

and read the article it came from as well (Its short):

http://www.macidol.com/tips/garageband/2006/03/recording-vocals.html

2. For people who are looking for that everyday solution to cheap reference monitors for under 200$ I highly recommend you check out a little insider secret known as Auratones. Basically, if you can get your mixes to sound good on these these they will sound good on anything else you put them through. Just remember they aren't the final solution but certainly a better way to start than should I dare say... (Behringer Truths 2031A's or Wharfdale Diamond 8's... yikes!)

3. For people looking for a good.. if not great compressor for under $200 look no further than the RNC-1773. They sell them for 175$ on ebay or 199$ brand new. (RNC = Really Nice Compressor). Generally its said that the compressor on this thing rivals anything thrown at it for under 2000$ so what more do you want after this thing? First sell your platinum record then think about stepping it up a bit... until then this will do... trust me on that.

4. Pre-Amp wise look no further than the Studio Projects VTB-1. Retail price for this is $99. Its great and well worth the money you spend on it if not 10 times that price. Remember this is 2006... so whatever gear you buy these days was a billiion times that 20 years ago.

5. A Good pair of Recording Headphones that are cheap and should solve all your recording problems (NOT MIXING PROBLEMS) are these:

6. And my final piece of advice for now is this: look up the words "Radioshack Reference Monitors". See waht comes up. You might like it.

Take care. James (Aka: The Pretentious)

Thanks for your time ;)

Don't say that too loud, especially around here!

There are professionals who post here and are happily using Wharfedale monitors in their home setups, if not their first class studios.

I agree about the RNC -- it would be a great box for 10 times the price. I've had mine for five years or more now, and wouldn't part with it for the world.

As far as Auratones go, they're not as secret as you might think. I've seen them for the last 25 years in both music recording and broadcast studios. I used to run a pair, then I started running a single one in the middle of the board to check mono compatability.
