Currently i have a AKG C2000B mic but that isnt really designed for guitar amps. Its a great mic for acoustical instruments and such but I am looking for a mic to record guitars and bass guitars. Any reccomendations with like a 200-300 dollar price limit.

sm57, md421, md441, beyer m201 are all favorites of mine for guitar amp

if you had to pick one, with like 200 dollar limit what would u pick?

like totally

Beyer M201 rocks. I also use an EV PL95 & an SM57

but the sennheiser MD431mkII has gotten me some sweet sounds

That Beyerdynamic M201 looked pretty nice, i think my friend may have a SM57 that i can borrow so ill try that one out. THe sm57 is pretty cheap though, does it still have the quality of mics like the M201?

Cant go wrong with a 57 or a 421. My favorite so far has been a beat up old EV RE 10.

How about a Senny e609, and you can have 2 or 3 of them, or a e906. Both work GREAT for Guitar Cabs. It's what they've been disigned for!

so do you recommend using more than one mic at a time to record a guitar amp?

I would add that a lot of folks like the Chinese ribbons on guitar cab. YMMV.

Sennheiser 421, a dynamic useful for all occasions, Ribbons are great check out shiny box or nady or oktava or apex

the sennheiser 421 is rather costly but it seems liek it would be pretty good, is an sm57 up to recording quality standards though, its pretty cheap but everyone seems to recommend it

No, not necessarilly, I meant you could pick up 2 or 3 of the Senny e609's http://tinyurl.com/khxd4
for your budget, or 2 of the e906.

The e609 is really hard to 'screw up' on a guitar cab. It usually sounds VERY natural, just like your ear hears it. A cheap chinese Ribbon would be cool, but I think you'd need a bit more experience, etc.

Personally I like to DI the amp/head, AND mic the cabinet too, then blend them together, and get a bit of varying flavor.

Hi,
I've heard a lot of people using the senn. 421 pretty much as a standard for toms (I would like to try on one). I have been using a CAD m179 on the rack toms and an adk hamburg on the floor tom and I'm pretty happy with the results.

An Sm 57 is definitely a mic to have, it is also pretty much a standard mic for mic'ng guitar amps, and snare. I have an audix i5 which i'm really liking a lot. I have been using it on snare and on my guitar cab. I'm mic'ng up a blues jr. and i like the i5 better than the sm57 for it. It sound more open, not as boxy sounding. But, I've only tried the i5 on snare, so I haven't compared it on snare to the sm57.

I also picked up a nady rsm-2 which is really great on my vocals and acoustic guitar. And I also used it as a room mic when recording drums.

I like combining a closer mic like an sm57 or an audix i5 with a condensor or ribbon mic on a guitar amp and mixing them together. You have to be careful that they don't phase each other out. Once you get into using more than one mic, you have to be careful with phasing. I've been using the the 3 to 1 rule, which which would mean if the mics are 5 inches away from the source, they should be 15 inches away from each other.

Anyway, I hope this helps.

thansk im gonna look into those Senny e609's, they look pretty good, the 421 is a bit out of my price range but thanks for that 15 inch tip ill be sure to keep that in mind whenever i record

SM57 is industry standard in micing guitar amps and snares. it can do vocals as well. very good microphone.
