gimmi your mic!
I'm looking for a piece of gear that would add some aggressive tube drive to my MOOG synth. What pice of gear below $500.- could get me there (pres/compressors/filters)? I can't get the sound I envision with distortion plugins.

Thanks!

Send to a small tube amp and mic it. It will help it settle in the mix a little too. YMMV

TL Audio (HHB in the USA) has a few pieces available in that range. Or, M-Audio "TAMPA" or The Brick.

Thanks for your replies!

NL5 - synth are usually recorded in mono, so one channel would be enough.

If you can find an old Leslie, they'll grind like nothing else. It's got a 40 watt tube amp on board. It's my new secret weapon.

I would personally suggest a GT Brick into an A Designs ATTY. This would enable you to drive the Brick hard by attenuating the output with the ATTY. Could definitely get some good pushed "dirty" sounds on lots of stuff and it's less than $500.
