What do you think of the low end on this thrash/death metal instrumental?

Mixing is very difficult for me, especially the low end. What do you think of the bass and kick drums on this and how could I improve them?

Thanks for your time,

Wow Chris, I really dig the tune. I'm already subscribed to your channel but I hadn't seen this one before. Nice job!

As for the low end on the drums I think they sound pretty good actually. I'm no expert so maybe someone else can give some advice, but I find that the guitars are a little more "forward" in the mix. It sounds like the drums are a little too quiet or "behind", which is a problem I have with my mixes as well. I'm not sure how to fix that (I'd love to be able to adjust my mixes as well) but that's about all I hear that could be changed.

Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff and seeing the answers to your question here.

Thanks Xcaliber! Do you have any music up on Youtube or soundcloud I could check out?

Can the "forwardness" of the drums or guitars in the mix be adjusted by shaving off or boosting the really high frequencies? That the only thing I can think of, but I am operating at an amateur level so my knowledge is limited.

Ok DM60, thank you.

Hey, buddy. I work in a somewhat similar fashion. A lot of those EZ Drummer kits just don't sound very good or natural. The kit you're using is ok, but even the hi-hats just sound generic and fake. I started using the Metal! expansion and specifically the Death Metal Tom Town kit that is included. I haven't even upgraded to EZ Drummer 2 yet although it looks interesting. Some people just don't like the sound of any metal kits, so we'll leave it at that.

Here's a clip of something I'm working on so you can hear the kit I'm using. I would say it's a noticeable difference yet with certain qualities that the kit you're using has as well, but it's up to individual preference on which sounds better. Mixing is hard for me too, but I think there are better kits that just have more power in the EZ Line.

OP, before you go turning knobs, give a few posts to hear what others are hearing. Some people have good systems, some people have better systems and some people know what to look for. A few other will show and post I'm pretty sure. Then you can get a better idea with more ears and systems.

i'm listening on my home speakers, it sounds fine to me. maybe make the drums a little louder.

This has really clean production and very similare to many thrash metal band in the genre (which as your request on mixing commentaries is a good thing). My ony complaint is bass guitar could of been louder or have more distortion to help put heavy in the low end.

These drums sound more natural to me, nice work. I am going to try to keep working with what I have bought so far, but I do agree that the drums on my track sound sort of fake. I might be able to improve on that with more dynamics in the separate hits and timing. Thanks for posting this.

Ok thanks. Yeah, I was using Amplitube's bass amps on my old demos but they just weren't cutting it for the metal stuff. At least I couldn't seem to get them to sound very good for metal. So I switched back to faking a bass amp tone using just some distortion from my DAW. If you look at the settings for the bass you can see the EQ of the distorted track's distortion is peaked at 1.4k, which is pretty high from my understanding. But then when I had it peaked at 500hz it sounded muddy to me.

Bass tone has been the hardest part to get right in the mix for me so far. I am going to try the Axe FX bass amps and see how that goes soon.

I'm struggling with good bass tone as well. I use Trilian bass software, and I get a killer top end, but I'm having a hard time with getting a supportive "beefy" tone

Ok DM60, thank you.

I've got a couple of things up on SoundCloud. Rock Song 1 (I know, great name :) ) is my latest. I'm still learning too, but my stuff is no where near as good/polished as yours. I'm planning to do a metal track next.

It sounds pretty good. I prefer the drums to have more snap.....I'm a huge fan of EZD. I started using on my stuff and think it is the best thing since sliced bread. They need a little work to get just right but amazing.
I know what you mean about the bass. I struggle with it as well. there are excellent people here that can point you in the right direction. Cheers
