Hey guys,

I used 4 mics on this one.. 3 Shure SM58s (tom, tom, snare) and a samson (?) bass drum mic. I'm playing on a Pacific CX kit, Clear Ambs over Coated Emps (weird combo I know, should be the other way round but can't be bothered to change them). Snare is a Mapex Black Panther Hammered Steel.

Havn't applied any EQ or anything, slightly panned the toms left/right.

What do you think? Does it sound ok, Do i need to add any mics, maybe condensors to give the cymbals more clarity? Any feedback would be apprietiated.

Recording

Thanks.

Nice Job

I think the recording sounds pretty good given what your working with.
I would focus on a room mic.Maybe stereo pair,....
The only problem I have with it is the snare. I'd muffle it just a hair and tune up the toms a little.
Other than that, you play like a good Jazz Drummer !

Without eq, this sounds pretty good. I know I can't stand the raw un-eq'd sound of my kit.. Those 58s do quite a good job - kick & toms are good. What you need imo is the overheads, to add some sparkle to the snare, and pick up the highs from the hats & cymbals better

THanks guys. Yeah thats a good idea, i'll probably add a stereo pair, will enhance the snare and cymbals as you both said. Now that I think about the snare does sound a bit flat..

hey Licketysplit, i love ur sound u got there. I've got the same kick drum mic. how did u position ur kick drum to get that sound witht the same mic? Any muffling? Wow, love ur sound. Kit sounds great

Hey thanks for the kind words Drumofo.. I made a mistake in my first post there.. it wasn't a samson kick drum mic, it was an Audio-Technica Pro 52 low freq. mic.

I have a ported reso head, so I placed the mic in there. Also the only muffling I used was a small, black DW pillow that came with my kit (PDP CX).

I've spent a lot of time tuning the bass drum though, and had just been gigging with it recently, so the sound has changed, it sounds horrible in person, but the lo freq mic seems to give it a nice boost. Anyway I hoped that helped in some way, happy recording!

The kick sounds really good to me. The snare is a bit muffled and ringy; try moving it away a bit or angling it differently. The toms pretty good.

All in all good job with a four mic setup!

The bass drum and toms sound OK but you may want to use a better sounding snare drum. Not trying to knock the kit but your snare is a bit weak. Unless that's the sound you are shooting for......

Not to be rude Johnnyfever, but if you read his first post, he has a black panther hand hammered snare, which are incredible sounding snares in my opinion.

All you need is maybe some small muffling like a moongel strategically placed,so you dont lose all that ring. I love some ring on my snare, it adds character to any snare. Maybe also try a different head.
On a side note - the way you have the snare sounding right now sounds great, and there's nothing wrong with that ring. It's up to you if you wanna get rid of it or not. I like it.
On the rest of the recording, the rest of the kit sounds great for what you're using. With the addition of overheads, you will have a dy-no-mite sound. Keep up the awesome work my friend.
