What do you guys like on snares and floor toms these days?

201 on snare is great... interesting about the guitar thing.. I've never actualy tried it.. but thinking about the characteristics of that mic I can imagine it would be nice

421's on the toms,D6 in the kik and e609 on the snare lately, which has "opened up" the snare sound for me quite a bit over a 57..It could all change tommorow, its a endless search ;)

I love the M201on snare. An SM57 works great too, but has more funky sounding off axis bleed. Sometimes I use a C1, especially if using brushes.
e604 or B1 on rack tom.
MD421 or B3 on floor tom.

The pro25 is an awesome floor tom mic, and I'm finding it tough to beat the m201 on the snare. The beyer M420 is my next choice for the snare, especially that coupled with an mxl603.

nt4 is my go to on snare.

still looking for my fave floor tom mic (really just need to buy a 421)
but my 604's kick ass, and will do fine till then.

It's interesting how much variation there is in people's choices. Mostly, I use Neumann KM184's overhead, Sennheiser e835 or e609s on snare, AKG C2000B on floor tom, AKG C414B-ULS on rack toms, and AKG D112 on kick. It's weird, but I just realised every mic I use is German or Austrian. Go figger. Sometimes, for a different sound, I use Oktava MC012 or Studio Projects C-4's overhead, Oktava MK319 on floor tom. The C414 rocks on floor or rack toms.-Richie

i've used my 319 on the floor before and was very happy with the result, maby i should try that again.

I play DW Collectors 16" and 18" floor toms, and i love putting my beta 52 inbetween the two. A LOT of low end, but also some smack and crack in the top end. Only problem is then i have nothing on my kick. Ill brb, ill go record a little with the 52 on the floor toms!

Pick up a D6 for the kick and you won't miss that 52 on the bass drum. I've never since reached for the 52 on the bass drum other than maybe to blend the two. The 52 actually makes a surprisingly nice second mic to capture the click of the beater.

no. I have recorded with the D6 AND HATE IT. If you want any sort of natural sound to your kick, dont use a D6. I would MUCH rather record with a sm57 on the kick than a D6. Im lookin for 4 used Beta 98's for my toms.!

I use MXL 2001 LDC's on the toms, (Youll need a sidechain gate system to do this) and sm57's on the top and bottom for the snare.

I've been using the Audix I5 on floor tom and HH for over three years now, and I like there, its not a deep mid/low mic it brings in a crisper sounding (better sticks) floor tom and when eq'd sounds great to me...still SM57 on snare.

Hello old thread! Didn't expect to see this still active. Since I've posted this I've made some discoveries of my own. I find that when I do the transformerless mod on the SM57, the sound opens up and more closely resembles my Beta 56s. On snare, I really like the sound of a regular 57 on top and a modded 57 on the bottom (crap...it may be vice versa; I can't remember). I haven't had the chance to try a modded 57 on both the top and bottom. That could go either way. On my last recording I used a 421 on floor toms and it was pretty good but still not as nice as a condenser. I had to compromise on the placement since I had only one 421 and I had to mic two floor toms with it, and that may have adversely affected my results. I may try the suggestion of using a condenser on the floor tom and gating it.
