What do I need to hook up a pair of Dynaudio BM5As?

Hi,

I am thinking of getting a pair of these down the road, but I am not sure how to hook them up to my Roland VS, which has 2 1/4" jacks for output to the monitors. The BM5A audio input is via a female XLR connector. Where can I get the appropriate cables, or do the cables come with the monitors? Is this a typical setup?

Thanks!

MK :)

most of the XLR jacks accept the 1/4" in the middle also...a two function plug...called a....hmm?...i forgot the name of these connectors?
I'd be surprised if these XLR don't take both the XLR & 1/4".

Thannks for the replies, guys. I was looking at Thomann.de, and they seemed to have the necessary thing.

This will be my first set of monitors, so I don't want to order them and then find I can't plug them in. I've only ever hooked up stereo speakers. So, I downloaded the PDF manual, and it shows that there is a balanced female XLR input.

Again, thanks!

just get xlr to 1/4" cables, not hard to find.

Ummmmm, NO. He needs XLR-TRS patch cables. Two very different cables for two very different applications.

Those are the Neutrik combo connectors. A lot of cheaper equipment has made use of those. However, there have been real issues with contact failure and other things concerning them which is partly why you will almost never see them on a quality peice of gear.

Well I was just giving him a general answer. Whenever I buy xlr to 1/4" there are always two options TRS or TS. I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't specific. Ummmmm, yeah...

interesting, never heard that before,
but I have the YSM1p's and they have the Neutrik and the only thing (being picky here) was the Neutrik which had a ~~loose~ connection on the 1/4"....so I used the XLR.
not being a frequently used jack, in my case, it wasn't worth bothering over to ship back or anything. I'd heard someone else mention the ~~loose issue too on the 1/4" part of the Neutrik.

basically, the combo connector seems cool at first glance, but they seem to easily develop problems, so in the long run, having independent xlr and TRS jacks is much better.

Not trying to be a dick, but everywhere I have ever shopped they are labled as xlr- 1\4" or xlr-trs. First place I looked for an example -

:D

My point is the TRS is 1/4". If he just RTFM the answer probably would've revealed itself. Like I said I was being lazy and just thought pointing him in the general direction would be enough. I almost knew I'd be called out for calling it 1/4".

1/4" unbalanced = 1/4" TS (tip/sleeve)

1/4" balanced = 1/4" TRS (tip/ring/sleeve)

The BX5s take balanced input only as far as I know, which means he's got to go with TRS. But TRS is still 1/4".

You just have to specify a *balanced* cable and you'll be OK.
