i dont know what these two mean.. does this have somthing to do with overheads? could someone explain this to me

thanks!

could you give some kind of context clue for what you are talking about.

Malone -- you misunderstood the nature of my post the other day (regarding mic placement).... I was using ASCII characters to help diagram the placement of spaced mics on overheads.... two mics spaced apart in parallel like this: "| |"

and coincident pair where the 2 mics converge to a common point from between 90 to 130 degrees -- so it looks like this: " V "

You shouldn't have taken my post quite so literally!

oh. i just got it.. cool. i was picturing a top view of a drum kit and the two lines (| |) were like where the mic should go.. but they are the mic pointing straight up and down.. (i hope) and the v would mean you can point two at the same source.

No, more like the mics are AT the same point and pointing in different directions. Imagine two mics directly above the drummer, one pointing down towards the left and one pointing down towards the right. This is called a coincident pair because both mics are, as much as possible, at the same point.

The advantage of the spaced pair (| |) is that the mics tend to be right above the sound. the disadvantage is that if the wavelength is some multiple of the difference in distance between the mics and the sound source you can get the two signals either doubling or canceling each other out. This is called phase distortion.
