I use GSnap (free VST autotuner) on vocals. Gets slightly better with each new release.

GSnap is actually not bad at all. I have a song where the singer sang scratch vocals, and we never got around to actually recording good vocals, so since he sang slightly flat I just used that and it sounds great. There's only one time when you can hear the vocals "tune" itself into the correct pitch, which sounds weird, but its transparent the rest of time.

one more vote for antress, SIR and blockfish.

also try poshofit eq. bloody brilliant

Freeverb Too

Takes a little fussing to get the hang of its controls. To my ears, its sounds more natural than Glaceverb.....once you get the hand of adjusting it.

My favorite so far are ReFX Nexus, NI Massive, and Prophet. There are tons of free VST plugins on their site, and they're actually all really good. FL Studio comes with an abundance of top of the line effects already, so I just like finding good synth plugins to use.

I have a collection of free VST effects, many of them quite good. Glaceverb is good, too bad I rarely use reverb. Classic Compressor and Classic Delay (forgot who made them) are also good. I'm sure once I use 'pro' effects my mind will change, but from what I hear, they are good.

Much better than the shit that Cubase LE came with.

Epic bumpage.

Heh, so yeah, I've had UAD for about two years now. My prediction was true....pro plugs kick ass. I now use reverb a lot more since I got the EMT 140. I will say, though, that I do still use quite a few freeware plugs. For example, from when I first made that post, I still use Classic Delay, but I think everything else I've discarded usage, except maybe the Classic Phaser when I need some Phaser effects. I have collected newer, better freeware since then, especially Bootsy's stuff.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bootsy's plugins yet.

You can find them here:

Downloads « Variety Of Sound

They are without a doubt the classiest and best sounding of all the available freeware out there.

I use FerricTDS and Density MkII often and they stand up to many plugins that cost hundreds of $.

I highly recommend them.

Cheers :)

Yeah...did you bother looking a literal 3 inches above your post?

EDIT: This thread was from 2008, so bootsy wasn't as well known back then.

I looked through the whole thread, actually. I must have missed that passing allusion of yours. No need to get snotty, man. Besides, the only mention is "Bootsy". No link. No plugin names. No nothing.

Cheers :)

I am late to this post but i'm going to say it anyway. The best plugins are the plugins that get you what you want from them. If you are getting the desired sounds from your current compressors, should you then spend loads of money upgrading to a selections of waves plugins? it doesn't make sense unless you want to list all the things your studio has to offer then names people know are always better.

This thread is mostly about free plugins and in that arena there is a HUGE discrepancy of quality. In any other thread I would agree with you but I feel you're being a bit too militant on this issue at this juncture.

Chill out, dude!

Cheers :)

Anyone know of a good free multi-band compressor? I don;t even know what you call them - but they compress certain EQ frequencies... I think there is one that comes with Cakewalk... I am using Cubase so they have to be .dll or something -

I really should know more about this =X

Yeah freeware are hit and miss. Many are crap, some are decent, and a few are actually really damn good (Density Mk. II....omg!).

And yeah, it is called a Multi-Band Compressor. I don't use them but I have the one that came with REAPER, and you should be able to get a VST version of that.
