What are the best monitors???

I Need a pair of nice monitors for a homestudio (/w PC) which would cost less than $400, either active or passive ones.
I'd be happy 'bout any info/opinion/advice !

Look around this forum. You will find a large push for the Yorkville, YSM-1 monitors. [boy, wait until they come out with YSM-2's]

You can get Yorkville.com on the net. Or, you can call them at their Niagra Falls office and they will give you the closest dealer in your area.

I paid 108.75 per speaker -- a real buy. You will dig them.

Clear, clean, and close. Good product for the money.

No, I don't work for Yorkville; but, if I did, I'd brag their product.

I figure you'd know this of all people, but the YSM-2 is the little brither to rhe YSM-1.

I would suggest spending a couple hundred more, all the monitors that were talked about are good monitors, but that is one of the most important parts of your set-up, dont lack on your monitors....

Carter, why a couple of hundred more....Yorksville YSM1 and and an Alesis RA100 power amp will run him the $400 he's looking to spend and would put most "HomeRecording" studio monitoring systems to shame....if hes monitoring in the corner of a bedroom, why have the mack daddy monitoring system anyway....

Jules, tell us about the rest of your setup and what type of room you are recording in....

yeah i agree, cheaper may not be lack on equipments nowadays. spend more money and effort on making music rather than production, that's what i'll say !

actually I haven't got anything to call it a setup, I'm just starting. I've made a few productions with my PC and my SBLive-Card (/w midi- and audio-samples), and it even doesn't sound bad but now I got me a room 27 sq.-meters (no control-room-separation) and wanna start recording guitars, piano, etc. . So first thing I need is a pair of monitors. Yorkville sounds good but the only place I can findum here in Germany is a shop on the internet, and of course I'd like to check 'em out first.
Or do You think, for that price, they are worth buying without listening to them?

I hate to recommend anyone buy anything without listening to them... but they are gorgeous sounding monitors.

Hey Jules, I definitely have to give you props for actually realizing that monitors ARE important!!! Most people starting out are like..."uh, what are monitors good for anyways???" You should probably go to a music store and check out a few models (although this won't necessarily give you the perfect example of what they'll sound like in your setup, it'll definitely help you decide.) Use your ears. By the way, some other purchases that will help you improve your sound are good microphones and preamps!

For what it's worth, I bought my Yorkvilles without listening to them; but, then, I could have sent them back for the usual "restocking" fee that runs around 15% of the purchase. My monitors costs a few bucks more than the 90 dollars per monitor I've read on this site because they had to be shipped from Canada and I guess that is added to the base cost of the pair. I'm very happy with them.

As a matter of fact, I bought the Yorkville Apex 430 mic just because of the quality of the monitors. I've plugged it in and it beats the heck out of my AKG3000 which I thought was a pretty good mic. The Apex 430 was cheaper and it is pretty good quality for the money. I'm sure there are better mics out there but $$$$ keep me in a certain boundry for gear.

Jules, I havent heard the Yorksville with my own ears either, but their are alot of ears I trust around this BBS.....those ears say that the YSM-1's are sweet sounding monitors....I'd get them if I was you....

The Yorkvilles are very tempting, but I'm saving my $ for Event 20/20s--and a Hafler TA1100 amp instead of the overpriced Alesis RA 100--total price about $500.

Big vs. Near-Field

Yeah, I've been to a nice music store around here but they only have big studio monitors, no near-field speakers at all. They didn't sound bad, I could get some nice ones for about $400 but the question is if I really need those big boxes. YSM-1 would cost me about 250 bucks a pair, but they're near-field speakers.
I know that near-field speakers don't have the sound quality of those big studio monitors, however this is a challenge for U to let Your mix be better, right?
So my question is, is the near-field stuff usually cheaper or more expensive then the big stuff? The big stuff's rather for prof studios, right? So what do U guys think about that? What do U guys use??

It depends what you are doing, is my understanding (bear in mind that I am not an expert, but I've been reading here for a while

Nearfields are great if you are close to them (hence "near" ) They depend less on the quality of the room (though you still have to control reflections coming back at the wrong ear)

The larger monitors are used in large control rooms and fill the whole room with great sound. You need a very good sound room to appreciate them properly.

For most people here, nearfields are what you want. And they have the added bonus of being cheaper

Okay okay, forget about the far-field stuff for $400, I was wrong, my fault, yeah, I thought they were far-field, was talkin crap, sorry
But some of You (tdukex, I think) mentioned the Event 20/20. They had a pair in that music store and they sounded pretty much okay. They have a little frequency decrement in the mids and no subwoofer but gotta say they impressed me. Cost lemme say 410 dollars, maybe I could negotiate 'em down and add an amp they wanna get rid of for altogether $500.
Would You go for it??
