100$ ain't much

i have a pair of mission 770's that i use for secondary monitors, very expensive hi-fi speakers.

picked them up at a thrift store for 50$!!!!

my advice to you, get lucky.

Having some hifi stereo speakers to do checks on is great, you can often hear that the low end is to loose or flubby that way. But for actual mixing and being able to hear detail, you need something that's a little better.

I think most of the newer powered monitors are pretty darn good, about 100x better than computer speakers. And if you need to save up $300 instead of $100, I think that's a good investment that you'll be happy with.

I stick to my earlier point: Without good monitors, nothing else matters. You can't hear what's going on anyway.

I would get used to a decent set of headphones like Sennheiser. But watch they dont have a boosted bass. Get ones specifically for monitoring purposes and not for listening pleasure. Will take a good bit of getting used to but will be better than PC speakers probably although headphones aint the best for monitoring.

past a point, calling speakers "studio" monitors or "hi-fi" speakers dosn't really mean much.

most hi-end (bose, for the record is not what i would consider hi-end) speakers are made for accuracy.

What the hell are you talking about?????????????
I think the "Radio Shack speakers" they were talking about are Vanessa Williams and Ving Rhames. Well, maybe Vanessa, anyway. *VERY* warm and analog...

:D

What is the point of Quantagee on this forum?

My opinion is that you should try and locate a half decent set of hi-fi speakers and amp, or a hi-fi with an auxiliary turntable input or whatever. Surprisingly good results can be had from them, IMHO ...
Quantagee is cool for some much needed comic relief :D

I agree about the hi-fi speakers - even radio shack had a set of 12" 3-ways that sound miles better than a 4" computer speaker for setting balances...used they should (or something like them) come in at the $50-$100 range...that's without power amp though so you gotta save for that too. I used to use a home theater amp that sounded very decent (Yamaha RXV1200) - it's cool to get home theater stuff - people are always upgrading and selling their old stuff cheap...unlike old pro audio stuff with that vintage price! Some of that HT stuff can do the job quite well...
