hi - it's me again. at it with more remedial questions...

what are powered versus passive monitors, what are the different applications for each and what are the sound quality differences?

i've taken previous advice and tried doing a search. although i found lots of stuff recommending different kinds of powered monitors & so on, i couldn't find anything basic.

thanks everybody.

Powered monitors have a built in amp and need only a line in to produce sound. Passive monitors need an external amp to drive them.

There are pros and cons to each, but I have never cared for powered variety.

Many PC speakers are powered and have a volume right on the speaker.

At the moment, the link I am posting to you is down (because of the power outage of the hurricane).

It has a plethora of info for you there, including a detailed answer to your question.

If you are a total newbie to sound recording, quite often powered (or active) monitors are a good choice because the built in amp is specifically designed for those particular speakers. There is no need to worry about choosing a separate amplifier whereby you will need some knowledge of electrical theory. i.e. watts and volts and ohms and all the other confusing stuff.

Just a thought.
