What are db's?

Hello,

I'm brand new to this website, and to home recording. I've purchased all my gear and and now trying to figure everything out. What are db's? Every dial and setting seems to deal with db's, and I don't know what that is, or how to figure out how many db's I need for what function. Can anyone give a new guy a quick lesson on that?

Thank you! Is there a strategy to figuring out how many decibles I should be setting everything to? Like, Threshold, for example? Sorry for the dumb questions.
 
well of course there is,but yer gonna have to get one of these
long winded guys to explain.
