I'm trying to decide between some Wharfedale 8.2A Diamond Pro monitors, or the KRK V6 or V8 monitors. any thoughts?

dude, the wharfedales are awsome. Definatley pick up a pair, they may be the best monitors under $650

Hi!

I just got the Wharfedales today along with a pair of KRK V6 from Guitar Center. I plan to spend some time tomorrow (between turkey, dessert, and football of course) comparing the two and will post my impressions. Stay tuned!!

Matt, do let us know. I'm curious about the comparison.

NotBrad... from all I've read, the Wharfies are indeed great budget monitors, but your claim about "best under $650" seems hard to swallow... have you really heard many others in that price range? I haven't tried the Wharfies yet, but I'll buy you a coffee and pie if they're a better sounding tool than the matched M-Audio BX5/SBX sub combination (under $650)... smooth mids, detailed highs, a bass end that seriously kicks down into the netherlands--and all tweakable to adapt to most smaller studio environments.

All I'm saying is that some wonderful monitoring options exist in that price range if one takes the time to listen and compare.

Best,

J.

I am guessing Notbrad has not and I know I have not but John Script aka Massive Master owner of Massive Mastering has heard alot of them and he has some $2,000 pluw B&W mains and he said the 8.1's he has were probably the best under a $1,000 and the 8.2A's have an improved crossover...pretty high praise from a mastering engineer. You can check for yourself at http://www.massivemastering.com/ the modification of the 8.1's was a custom crossover tweak that was improved on the 8.2's

Right now I would trust his ears over mine but different systems work better for different rooms for different people and as usual your preferences may vary.

You can find his recomendation on the Wharfdale thread here and I discussed them with him on the mastering forum at studioforums.com as well.

Good to "see you", Scott! I catch your point, and I'm certainly no expert either. (It's all I can do to hit the record button without dropping my guitar.)
I do agree that getting some guidance from those more experienced here is a great starting point. I'm just adding the usual caution that "one size rarely fits all" in the music biz. That said, I just ran across a very solid (but not stellar) review of the Wharfie 8.1's in this month's SOS magazine. And I know that a 2.1 system, if the integration is smooth, is hard to beat in the low end. Also, if one needs to tweak the monitors (rather than the room) for a quirky environment, as I've had to do, then having this option can direct one's choice of monitors. Fortunately, I think we can all agree that there is a rapidly increasing number of good choices in the budget range.

I'm still looking forward to hearing the Wharfies, which my local shop has just gotten in, or hearing from anyone else who has compared them to other choices in that price range. One day when I'm rich I just might pick up a second set for AB'ing purposes. (If anyone would like to compare them to the M-Audio Bx5/SBX sub combination, you could always send me a set of Wharfies and I'll be happy to offer a very long-term evaluation.)

Best,

Jeff

The Wharfies probably are the best under $650. The first monitors in a higher price range that I've heard of people agreeing to be better are the Tannoy Reveal actives, which start around $650.
