Newbie question, active vs passive

Great thread, I just read all 400 and something posts and I feel better informed. I laughed, I cried...Seems to be some very knowledgable people in this forum. After the first 300 reviews I was convinced I would get the Wharfes, but then the tide began to turn and I may just check out some Yorkvilles.

I've been playing for over 20 years but am brand new to recording. Recently bought a Tascam DP-01fxCD 8 track digital workstation. My question is this, do I need active monitors if I just plug them into the line outs (2 RCA jacks) on the back of the machine, or will passives get the job done?

Sorry for my ignorance, I bow my head in noobie shame.

yeah, actives have the amp built into the speaker. you just plug straight in.
its a neat novelty, saves table space. i don't think a human can tell a difference between a actuive and passive?...blindfold test...

there are some "technical benefits" to actives if done right.
the Active's inside the cabinet...and then some.

Technical Quantifiable= Real things...Active crossovers can have a sharper crossover cut-off. Ex. 2.5khz is common point /crossover where the woofer stops and the tweeter takes over...think of a hitting a note on the guitar, a 6db trails off a bit, a 24db slope would be immediate, hard-wall.

Technically, the sharper slope is the better for crossovers.
as you get funky things where the woofer and tweeter are blooping the same notes notes together...kinda like fumbling a Baton handoff in a Track race.

But that said I'll take a DynAudio BM5 6db passive crossover over a Radio Shack 24db Active Ultra-Pro spec sheet...any day. there no laws on lying about Audio stuff...anyone can say their a Mastering Engineer.
Actually, I have a Home Business ID now and I am a CEO.

another note is the passives, once you have a good amp, passive is 50% cheaper to upgrade....you know contagious gearfever=upgrade. my type is monitoritis while others is guitaramplifier' tubeitis disease, or mixing boardshingles.... :p

The photo is of the hi-fi version of the 8.2 which comes with the yellow Kevlar cone and different enclosure color. Not sure about the specs, though....

I don't think it's really fair to compare the Meyers to the Wharfedales. Many people out there either love the Meyer's, or hate them. They really have their own sound which I personally like a lot. Also, those Meyer's really open up and sound a lot like main monitors when you pull them up nice and high. The Meyers also cost about 15x? as much as the Wharfedales.

Maybe you should be looking to compare the Wharfedales to the Alesis monitors and not the Meyer's;)

He's still here. He just PM'ed me today about the 8.2a's for placing an order. So yes, he's still here.

;)

Beware of Deepwater

 Beware of DEEPWATER.

I never ever do blind online transactions! I dont care if u are a Event rep and can get me a pair of brand new 20/20's BAIS for $450 free shipping.

I sent money via paypal on FEB 11th. He sent back replyed back on same day for invoice. I emailed him on Feb 20th to see what was up. Like what carrier he uses, tracking number, and delievery method. All he replied with "ill call and see what is happeneing tommorow", which would of been for Feb 21, 2006. I emailed him on Feb 21 and today. No reply. I found out he has two email addys, dpwebster@bellsouth.net and prosound@ bellsouth.net.

I emailed him today saying if I dont get my monitors tommorow then I request to have my paypal refunded. I never been scammed over the web since I always buy from real established companies like Sweetwater, MusiciansFriend, and zZsounds.

Next time Im going to do 25% down payment, becuase this is f**king rediculus. I ordered an expensive big screen tv for my family, and it arrived on Feb 16 with no problems.

I guess you missed the thread where my Wharfedales came 6 months late.
Yes, beware of Deepwater. Better yet, don't buy from him.

Are u kidding me 6 months? Lord have mercy. I read some people in this thread had a turnaround time between 5-7 days. Heck even DW said in the PM it would be 7-10 days. Its been about 10 days. No monitors I just found out yesterday I could of easily gotten the Wharfe's from zzSounds for $30 more. Stupid me.
