I tried to post this in the mic thread but I can't start a new thread so here it is and spread the word -

Oktava is coming back to the US at the first of the year.

Some of you will be happy, some don't care and some don't understand and that’s okay too.

Yours truly will be a direct dealer and will happily take care of my HR friends. I'll let you know when you can start placing orders and getting pricing.

Below is the email I got last night from the new US distributor.

Dear David,

We will start distributing our products in the United
States early next year. Currently we are formalizing
Our presence in the United States. I will contact you
with information on available products and pricing
shortly once it's available.

Wowww

nice i just hope u can beat that 90's decade prices when u got a pair of mk012 @ 100 usd.

if u in that range i'm sure i be buying 3 mikes from u :P

only bad think prolly i better wait a lil so i can buy the wharfedales and the Oktavas in the same ship cuz going to mexico is kinda expensive :(.

btw men push the gas with your web page i really like to see your online catalog, i'm in a soundcraft compac 10 race too.

I came very close to buying the Behringer's just because it was so hard to find the Wharfedales in Europe. I considered buying through Deepwater, but with the cost of shipping, price of a voltage converter and VAT, Dolphin Music in the UK was the better choice. They should be here on Monday! :)

wharfedale and others

Under a thousand dollars, what are some comparable or better speaker/sub combinations than the 8.2as & (insert well-matched sub here)?
I'd be interested in what Mr. Deepwater's thoughts are on this. What else would you recommend?
Also- I'm not sure how old this thread is (the dates are all messed up), but was wondering if the same deal is still being offered for the 8.2as, Mr. Deepwater. (I can't seem to access your site, by the way.)
As an aside- what is the benefit of using passive speakers and an amp over active ones, or vice versa?
If what has been posted on this thread is at all accurate, then this is a great bit of information. I can't seem to find any other user reviews or comparisons of these particular monitors...

The Wharfedale Quad Series are the next step up as are the KRK V series and maybe the Mackies (Not Tapcos)

Yes it is and if you need pricing on the KRKs or Quade Series drop me an email

You get a better crossover network and the amps in the active are tuned and rated to work perfectly with the speakers. You also have less stuff to hook up which means less potential problems.

I know a least 30+ HR members have have bought a pair and I've only had one return. Thay come with a full five year warranty and Wharfedale CS is great. If you ever have a problem just drop me an email and I'll make sure its taken care of. As a personal note I perfer the 8.2A over my RP8s. My website is currenty getting heart surgery but you can email at prosoundQ@bellsouth.net

My new Wharfies should be here within a week, so I'll post my review when they arrive!

Much props to deepwater.

I just got my Wharfedale's this morning! I've been listening to Pink Floyd and some acoustic cd's this morning and am impressed with the sound. I ordered these in the afternoon on Thursday and the woman told me they'd ship the next day and get here on Monday..... I was asleep when the UPS got here so I was awaken to a nice surprise.

Well, I pop into the forum to do some research on monitors and find this gem of a thread.
Deepwater: you have a PM!

Cams

I now have my Wharfedale actives installed and playin'

In Australia its only a 3yr wrty but, thats pretty good anyways!!

I've been listening to some Mars Volta and playin' em for a few hours and well...My JBL JLX 16's sound better...but the wharfies are pretty close for overall sound but pure clarity not a touch on the JBL tweaters.. perhaps its the flatness showing through.....

On a mission to improve the overall clarity of the Wharfies..

I have played with the setting's and positioning a bit and with a Bass Cut activated on the speaker closest to the corner it helps bring out some supperb clear highs and eliminates some of the mud in my small untreated room.

I wanted to get FOSTEX PM-1's but I was priced out in AU so opted for the Wharfies...

Im looking to decouple them this week and add some sound insulation by heading down to CLARK RUBBER to pick up some cheap thick foam decoupling device!!

Peace:
J.

Hey Kid,

Where did you get them from and what price?

BTW, I would NEVER use the word cheap in the same sentence as Clark Rubber.

What's a good amp to drive the passive Wharefedale 8.2's?

I just ordered the passive 8.2 speakers from Amazon.com. They're on clearance (since they're not being made anymore, I assume) for only $160 with free shipping. They're the black ones with the yellow drivers that people have written great things about. These should be a nice upgrade, since I've been monitoring on an Aiwa stereo system.

I'd like some advice on what amp to use to drive these. In the short-term, I can just use the Aiwa. Am I doing myself a disservice if I use the Aiwa amp, rather than a better amp? If so, what would you recommend? Am I better off with an amp specifically made for driving studio monitors or a good hi-fi amp? What are the differences? If I go with a studio amp, how do the various brands compare (Hafler, Samson Servo, Alesis, Art, etc.)?

I know that's a lot of questions, but any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Brendan

Of those you listed, I would certainly look into the Hafler over Alesis, Samson, etc... If you are a little more serious, look for a used Bryston. They do carry a 20 year transferable warranty:)

The Samsons are very widely used but Hafler looks like a quality amp if you can afford the extra!

If any of these Wharfedale passives are still available, I might think about buying some. But only if I can use an existing amp. I have a 25 y/o Yamaha CR-1000 Stereo Receiver (100w rms/ch) that hasn't had a lot of use over the years. If anyone is familiar with the amp and it's suitability with the Wharfedale passives, I'd appreciate your feedback. If not a good match, I'll be soon ordering the actives from deepwater.

i did read on soundonsound.com a review about the 8,1 ´s and they did´nt get much points.
"Wharfedale Pro Diamond 8.1 Pro Active eSub Reviews : Monitors October 2004 Active Monitors
These new active nearfields from Wharfedale offer a polished sound for studio owners on a budget."

How it could be that here a lot of people are faszinating of the wharfi´s and SOS only recommend them for beginner´s ?

And it was interesting to read there a better krk rp5 review
"KRK Rokit 5 & Rokit 8 eSub Reviews : Monitors August 2004
Active Monitors
KRK's new monitors use glass-fibre cone technology to offer a big sound for those on a budget."

, but in this forum the wharfi´s are better than the krk´s.

hmmm
Did read in german keyboards forum that a lot of people use now the new krk rokit´s ( especially the combination rp5 + rp10 ) but only one or two the wharfedales.

I have to decide between both know and am a little bit confused now.

My ears aren´t experienced enough to decide this question.

And what about buying one now and one later to use both - Are they very similar ? Which one is better for mixing & which one is better for mastering - ( 8.1 or rp5 ) + rp10 ?

PS: it´s interesting too, that wharfi´s uses same tweeter & woofer material like the KRK V Series, which are more expensive than the RP series. Are the wharfis as good as the KRK V series ?

If you read this thread closely the 8.2's are the ones getting the great reviews not the 8.1's.

Deepwater could probably tell you the specific differences from the 8.1's and 8.2's but the 8.2's score much higher that the 8.1s

Gott'em on Ebay for $570AUD plus shipping. I wanted PM-1's but they would have cost $1000 AUD's from a retailer!!

Im basically wanting to re-create the Auralex Mo-Pads'
http://www.auralex.com/sound_isolation_mopad/sound_isolation_mopad.asp
by heading down to Clark Rubber they are pretty exy in AU but I dunno what they charge down at clark rubber but it cannot be that much, depends on what density they have too..!!

What an awesome thread and forum. My search is over. I plan on ordering a pair of 8.2a's right away. :D

Dude - you need to listen to some and see what you prefer first! I know where you're coming from but I went and gave these a good listen amongst about five other sets and they were third on my shortlist afterwards. To me they sounded a touch plasticky and I couldn't hear some stuff on them that I could hear on the ones I did buy.
