I went down to my local sound control the other day to test out some monitors. i tried the wharfdale 8.2s and the Yamaha msp3's. now obviously the wharfs where alot better than the msp3's, the bass just wasnt there as you'd expect. But the sales guy said that the tannoy reveals where a whole bunch better, much clearer. They didnt have any in stock so i couldnt try them. Was he just saying this to get more money out of me or are they much better?
everyone on this board seems to be saying the wharfs are by far the best in this price range.

Thanks
Jamie

I would like to know as well. The active Reveal's are quite a bit more expensive than the active Wharfedale's....

Unfortunately, i havnt tried the Wharfdales out. So this might not be to accurate. But i own a pair of the reveals.

My bet is that the Wharfedales are more accurate than the tannoys.

What i dont like about Tannoys is they dont have very good bass response. You can get used to them, but it can be difficult. Also the Tannoys have a high end that is a little too smooth in my opinion. Your ears dont get fatigued very easy on them which is very nice. But they lack definition and dynamics that you should have in those frequencies.

But the Tannoys are pretty good once you get used to them.

i have a pair of the tannoys, and love them.
about the same as above, maby could be better in the lows
and a bit on the dark side. this is good for me because i like to mix dark, so if a pair of monitors is on the bright side my shit comes out dark.
best thing about them is the detail in the mid/low mid area, this will save you more than once

oh, i've only heard the warfdales in the store but they seem a little to "flattering" to me

I have Tannoy Reveal Actives and Wharfedale 8.1's....So I can't tell you exactly what you want to know but here it is anyway:

I use my Tannoys for mixing (w/subwoofer) and the 8.1's are in my bedroom for recreational listening (w/o subwoofer). Both would seem to need a sub for mixing. Anyway, it could be because I've had my Tannoys for so much longer, but I would (and do) choose them for mixing. The mids seem to be more present. My mixes end up translating very well.

The bass response on the 8.2A's really is pitiful. Basically nothing going on below 80Hz. They beg for a sub.
It's not impossible to make a cheap well-tuned cabinet/driver design that goes down flat to 40Hz, but apparently Whafredale either doesn't know how or doesn't care. I'm dissapointed.

Whoa, that might be going a little far there. I have yet to run into the budget nearfield powered monitor that goes down to 40. Keep in mind just how cheap we're talking here. I think both the Tannoys and Wharfedales are killer for the price (although as I said I prefer the Tannoys given the choice) but both need a sub. You just can't expect rockin' bass in an active monitor that goes for under $300 a pair (not that the Tannoys are that cheap, but you get the idea).

So...would I get the Tannoy sub with it? And where does the sub plug in to?

Well, Yorkville YSM1P's do, for one... and they do it very tightly, too.

hi, i have just sold my tannoy reveal actives and bought some warfedale 8.2s. in my opinion, the tannoys sound stronger with a more stable bottom end however i could not fit them into my setup because of the lack of a volume control. Therefore, the noise's from my less than perfect setup were getting to the monitors and it was being amplified to the max. i am fairly happy with my warfedales but im not so sure about the bass they produce.

i can relate to that, selling off for the new.
lack of volume control?
you know one of the best purchases i ever bought was a
hi-end audio - stereo preamp.
the thing has inputs, outputs, volume knob, bypass of tone circuit(straight thru), MONO button which is great for checking volume of each track...
and patch bay for misc!
just an idea.

your comment is strange almost everyone loves their Wharfies? except for the obvious shipping/damaged/ QC stuff but that goes for anything.
you got Actives I assume.
I had some Wharfs in the cart at Amazon.com just the other day.
I'm passive, so its Kevlar yellow cones Made in the UK type Wharfs $190pr.

I been looking at Tannoy Reveals too,
hell, i been looking at everything. :)

are Reveals good for TRACKING??

I would use headphones for tracking...unless your amp/microphone is isolated.

Not sure what you were plugging into the Reveals, but I use my Mackie 1202 as a "volume" control and they sound fine. I never even thought of a pair of speakers (even if they are active) having a volume control. Just adjust the output level of whatever you are using to feed the monitors.
