Weight of the World - mix suggestions plz?

Here's a new tune I'm in the process of mixing, and suggestions about the mix would be helpful!

Started out being bluesy southern rock, but now sound like overproduced REM maybe...

By the way, I know the bass is too loud in the intro... :rolleyes:
 
Hey just wanted to say I really dig the tune. I like the instrumentation and feel to the track, very cool ;) It's a good listen... the speakers where I"m at are too bad and unreliable to comment on the mix, I'll give this another listen at home sometime soon and see if I hear anything.

The vocals lack warmth, and are too shrill in the high mids.
The tom fills poke out too hard, they dont sound cohesive to the kit itself.
Overall there is a lack of sub bass.

Excellent, solid songcraft; nary a hint of padding or sense of losing its way anywhere in the song.

I can hear this sounding really ballsy live, on a great PA system, and standing there just soaking it all up.

Great guitar tone and tasty, intelligent soloing of the kind I aspire to - third bar (suddenly frantic in the wake of some really smoothly executed phrasing) would raise some eyebrows in my band, and I'm finding myself doing the same thing here. The rest of the soloing is in complete control of itself.

You obviously know what you're doing and this is just personal opinion (and some people really aren't those around here),

I'm really intrigued with the sound of this song. It's floating and powerful and I hear everything, but it's just not quite hitting me in the gut. I hear every note the bass is playing fine, the guitars seem to be loud and clear enough, the voice is right there (personally the echo is a gnat's more than subtle as I'd have it, but it certainly fattens the voice).

What do the drums and bass alone sound like? (Could the kick and snare be brought up a tad?)

I'm flicking my foot and nodding my head and enjoying this song a lot, but I'm not beating the table yet. Maybe tomorrow I will, and then I'll regret writing all this!

Would liek to hear more of your stuff.
 
Oh, and ditto xfinster's comments. It is a bit brittle sounding tonally, perhaps. What gear was used?
 
Wow! Thanks for all these detailed comments!

I did all the music and mixing for this, but the vocal was sent to me from someone on Artist Collaboration, he also wrote the lyrics. I found his vocal sound to be a bit boxey sounding and brittle, and have been trying to fix it.

This was all recorded on Cubase SX 2. There are 2 guitars recorded direct and processed through NI Guitar Combos, and 2 lead tracks through the same. There is 1 delay kind of guitar recorded direct through an Echo Park delay pedal, 1 more through a real amp.. His vocal, don't know how it was done, but I did 34 tracks of back vocals to fill it out. Nobody said they were too quiet, I thought they were. The drums are Drumkit From Hell. My daughter told me the kick was too loud so I lowered it, maybe that needs to come up, plus I rolled off the low end (like below 50hz) maybe I'll bring that back up too. Bass is a real bass recorded direct, and there's a B3 organ.

Gonna fix stuff, like those toms and the low end and post another mix! ..and the vocal eq..
 
This is a very solid recording, and a great song. I can't really add anything to the excellent comments above. I noticed the thick, rich backing vocals. Very nice.

I look forward to hearing the remix.
