I have noticed that most wav files (for example, a movie clip) that can be downloaded from the net etc do not seem to take up as much disk space as the ones I record myself - for e.g. most short samples seem to take only about 100-200kb, yet a snippet of audio of equal length recorded by me using cakewalk or sound forge takes up about 1-2mb - following the 10MB/minute rule. What is their secret - are they compressing them in some way or what? Malgo.

It's ok - i found the answer - i thoguht a .wav file was just a wav file - didn't know you could compress it and still call it the same name - course if I had stopped to think about stuff like k/bits, mono or stereo, khz and so on, I should have known... Still all part of the learning process eh? I actually converted mine by just using the windows sound recorder - to 32k/bits 22khz mono mpeg-3 - I don't know if that's the best or not but it certainly did reduce them - they were only speech clips for something at work so quality loss was not really noticeable. great! Cheers - Malgo
