I liked the creativity, that's lost these days when bands/arteeests try to emulate their favorite mtv celebs. nice job. being a drummer that's the thing that stood out to me. they were very tight, a bit too much hi-hat and a little busy but it wasn't tooo much. I would record it with straight 8ths on the hats but that's me - I thought it was cool. I've always loved that type of music...surreal/psychedelic/experimental, harder edge but not screaming in your face.

peace~

still listening to and digging this tune. I'm used to the drums now and they're starting to grow on me. I doubt I'll shave my balls though and I can guarantee you I'd never use the Sami method..... catching them in a power drill and removing a postage stamp sized patches.

what kind of axe? i'm really digging those geetar tones. humbuckers, I assume?

No way. Okay, not that Jamal and I are the same person or anything, b/c we're NOT, but there's no way you didn't sing "balls"... take a poll. I know JB and I are not alone in this. If you intended to sing "bones," then I amend my earlier statement about only needing to re-sing 2 words.

:D

ok and if your still not convinced ....read the reply directly above chris'........:D .....come on ..you said........BALLS.........hehehe..

M. Brane You're someone whose opinion I trust a lot. Thanks for the honesty on the execution part :)

Thanks and your welcome.

Someone would point out my obvious flubs on bass guitar, and "fake-it-till-ya-make-it" soloing style

Shhhhhhhh! Don't blow your cover, dude! :p

Seriously I dig your soloing. Tension is good! :)

So... which was worse, recording methods or performance :p

The only thing I really didn't dig was the drums. They sound good for fakes and the riffing was cool but you need some kind of a constant in there to keep the groove going. Maybe some percussion like a shaker or somethin'. I didn't care for the guitar tones either but most others do. Personal opinion I guess. I'm just not into "synthetic" guitar tones. ;)

Your vocal is good but also suffers from poor tone. Sounds band-limited. Perhaps try some different mics or double track/chorus for some fatness.

I liked the keys and the acoustic.:)

I'm glad you're at the point in life where you feel opposite of this song :) Actually, I'm there too. I wrote this beginning 4 years ago, on the VS-880... when feeling pressured to slip back into "conforming" again. It's when I started growing this damn hippie hair :p

What I meant by opposite was I'm somewhat disappointed in my parents. I still love 'em though.;) I just wish they would have kicked my ass a bit more when I was younger. Would have saved me a lot of grief later in life.

I cut off all my "hippie hair"(which I had since junior high) when I got married for the second time back in '99. Got tired of it getting tangled from riding, even when it was tied up. I'm into the low-maintenence hair now.

wow, really great track man. Loved the vibe@232...250. Guitars are great, and your vocals are spot on too...niceeeeeee

all right all right... smartasses

...the ballshavers will get theirs soon :D ;) (BTW Sorry for posting after saying responses would be made via PM... only one bump today... possibly one more TOTAL... then it dies...)

Sam Yeah... the synths need to move out of the way of that guitar somehow... needed a brite-sounding guit for that intro, and the Les Paul wasn't cutting it. So, I put a DiMarzio bridge p.u. in an old Peavey (ugh :o) guitar, and tried it... still didn't work... ended up using the 4-year-old scratch track from the original VS880 thing...

Yeah... levels were uneven... noticing that with each pass.... the volume envelope on the voc track looks like the NYC skyline.... maybe compression would be easier :( BTW would LOVE to hear "actively guilty"... as I'm sure the rest of the group would. Sounds like a winner.

JR#97 Just use the 24-bit "Wizoo" kits, if you can. Plus, make sure you send the snare and kick to their own separate channels. Leave tom toms in stereo. Use a separate LM4 module for all cymbals, and leave those in stereo. Create two separate rhythm tracks--one all drums, the other all cymbals. That's all. EQ/FX are much simpler this way. Hell yeah... I'd love to do a collab... with anyone here... but you'd have to supply the musicianship

Guernica No problem, G. I've been using the analog outs of the J-Station, since IMO the S/PDIF out sucks ass.

WATYF Do I get it? Maybe... but maybe my drummer has three arms :p :D

vaughn thanks for listening, and your comments. Busy-ness... yes... the hi-hats in many cases are just used to hold up the hi-end. I need to get away from that crutch, and roll off the sub bass to tilt the spectral balance back toward the highs. That might help.

JR#97 :D Damn... what a bunch of self-mutilating freako's we got here :p The main ax is a Les Paul studio; alternates between all 3 switch positions, depending on the part played. (e.g. middle position on the left, neck position on the right, etc...) Jangly guits were either the Ibanez Roadstar II, or the aforementioned Peavey. Acoustic was an x/y stereo mic'ed acoustic-electric (Epiphone)... sounds just like ass direct, so mic'ing was the way to go.

Lyrics to "Lumber", aka "The Ball Shaving Song" :D

You're in, and I'm out again
you'll never know
just what you've found until
you discover the wrong lover
again

Burn your lumber to the ground
Learn the number on your cloud
Help me find my vitamins
Help me find out where I' been
Ashes, nothing less
(Some days I wonder) (BG)

Son, you're a disappointment
Burn your lumber to the ground

I'll live in your skin again
I'll shave my bones
down to sticks and you'll shove 'em in
you'll just murder, enslave, and wonder
why I died again

...
(yup.. the last line sounds like "Wide-eyed again"... so I'm not sure how to articulate it  )

M. Brane Thanks for liking my soloing. Damn... almost want to go to the next jamfest, now :) Another vote for "constant" and structure. Actually I thought about that for a long time, too. It seems like some 8th note hi-hats would work in several places... & IIRC that was attempted, but didn't "fit". I'll try better this next time. Thanks.

Vocs had poor tone, or poor intonation? If it's just "tone", then WHEW... earlier I told Llarion it was a quick & dirty 350Hz low rolloff (highpass filter) just to keep the bass/snare/guits/vox separate for cheaps. The plan is to restore most of the vox "body" and eq properly afterward.

Doubling the vox shouldn't be a problem, since there are about 10 separate lead vocal tracks (!with 9 muted!)

Thanks for your extensive reply.

David Wow, thank you. That second bridge really helped the dynamics, IMO. Thanks for liking it :)

All Ball Shavers no, the next song by me won't come in 500 more posts... and it's NOT... repeat... NOT about fudge packers :p

Chad, I love you like a brother (in a totally NON-sexual way and all), but I don't think your articulation of "why I died again" is the problem. See, it has more to do with the way you sang "BONES" as if the word were spelled "B A L L S"...see, THAT's the part I'm talking about.

;)

BTW - I spit coffee all over my monitor when I saw your "A.K.A., 'THE BALL SHAVING SONG'" addition. Very cool to see you have a sense of humor about this. Kinda' cool to see you squirm, just a bit...(in a totally manly way, of course).

:D
Mr. "What A Relief THAT Is"

Well at first listen......the drums sounded like they were all over the place but when I went back and really listened closely....they're dead-on. Now maybe they could be just a tad straighter occasionally to lay the groove a little more but they are definitely right in the groove even as busy as they are.
And the rest of this is just fine. I'd really like to hear this once you've mixed it more carefully cause it sounds damn good as it is.

participant,

Pretty cool, nice big full sound space, and I like the semi- raw- gritty vocals. Plenty of guitars filling out the frequencies, -something I'm working on. I didn't totally get confortable with the drums, but the *sound* is good.

Dara

p.s. thanks for listening to my tune...plenty of valid comments

sorry Chad but I had to..

normally I find it annoying when the same person posts 50 times on the same thread,
but I had to boost this one again holmes.. I love this song..

You see, I'm a dissapointment too..

late!

This was one wild ride!!

Nice tune, and I like your very honest sounding voice.

To have all this going on, and such a grreat recording at the same time, pure ear candy!!

Did you say real drums?

GT

well, the post looks like it's been around for awhile, and i missed it last time around.........i didn't read all the comments, but i think i read that you used a J-station for the guitars.......it sounds great on the distorted guitars, almost like the smashing pumpkins tone, the clean tones aren't as great, but are decent.................the drums sound really solid..........great work

Where do you live....

So I can kill you slowly, and then move up one on the guitarest scale.

J/k FINALLY SOMEONE ELSE HAS KILLER GUITAR TONES AND YOU GUYS CAN STOP PICKING ON ME ! !
Lol, now i wanna make alternative songs again haha
What a great tune...

excellent! i love this one!

i haven't read everything that's been posted so I'm surely echoing someone elses sentiment but here's my take after three listens.

I LOVE the beginning funky guitar stuff. The synth was a little out of place and distracting. The drums completely ruin the opening groove.

actually i like all of the guitar work and singing and dislike everything else. I'm listening to this and really diggind it but I'm pretending that you took the faders on the drummer and pulled them way below zero.

PLLLLLEEEASe find a drummer soon. This song would kick ass with a solid drum track. Oh and a scream or two in the vocal line would be an excellent addition.

Did I mention the funky guitar intro? I love that shit. It's stuck in my head. you must post more often...once your drummer goes through detox :).

Pretty weird-ass stuff. The beginning really sounded like the drummer-machine-programming-god was angry or something :D But this song just rocks. There's some mix issues like the guitar tone. It's getting there, but it lacks something. It feels too thin in a way. Or maybe more distortion and less compression (or is there compression?). It might be a preference thing, I dunno, but that's what I think anyway. And the drums sound midi :D It's not because of the programming or whatever, though. Better sounds needed. And if they were real drums, I'm gonna hit myself in the head with a pencil.

I like the vocals and funky guitars, arrangement and the whole feel. And nothing wrong with the bass either. This is great. About 1:45 or so the hihat's were really too loud or too high-endish. Hey, that 2:10 solo is great. Bring it more upfront from the right. Need to come LOUD.

Ok, listening again I'm not sure the heavy guitar tone is thin. I guess the listening volume was too low the first time around.

flushed... only to resurface!!

;)

Thanks to all who've replied to this thread... one last response to thank those who bothered...

Lt. Bob & mcmd were PM'ed right after their responses... thanks again, guys :D

sam, the only disappointing thing about you is how humble you are  (ah... but you're baked right now, so maybe that made sense somehow ;)) Thanks for liking the toon bro.

GT wow! Another well-respected audio guy likes this rough, incomplete tune. Very flattered, GT. The finished version will hopefully be less of a bumpy ride :)

powderfinger thanks for listening. I was hoping you would; I enjoy listening to your stuff too, man. Is it the acoustic that sounds bad to you? Probably because of the delay on one side of the stereo image... yeah, that will be tightened. Thanks.

Sigma9 [Chad picks himself off the floor]... words fail, man. A guitarist like YOU saying that about my tone? Incredible. Thanks man :) All you guys saying this "rocks" just blows my mind... BTW I'd love to hear a super-clean mix of "Alternative Boy". That song rawks...

erichenryus lol... a stream of conciousness review... love it... seems to be the consensus that something is wrong about the synths... drums are a little strange, yes, and some of them will change... are you saying you disliked the bass guitar? There are a couple flubs on bass, and during the bridge (1) the bass tone isn't wonderful (it's the compression)... funny, cause it sounds good soloed... an EQ problem, no doubt.

And yes... screams are coming!! I just have to get ready for the torn vocal chords that are sure to follow... heh... and the drummer will be off drugs just long enough to put up the next mix ;) Thanks for your thoughts!

CrankyOne YES! The Crankster listens to my little jingle... excellent.

"But this song just rocks"...

:D That's cool of you to say! A true heavy-metal arteeste (sp) like yourself saying that makes it mean more... yep... aware of many mix issues, since this is just a roughie... still needs EQ tweaks, level bumps, vocal FX, and a stray guitar line or two. Not to mention the screams :) You're right about needing better drum sounds; the tom-toms just sound like ass; the snare doesn't sound bad when I lay off the EQ... (but guess what...? )

If I can legitimately, legally inject one of my drummer friends full of narcotics, he may 1) have enough energy to record this track 2) be stupid enough to do so for free :) I really look forward to your toons, Crankster, and hope you'll hear the remix of this whenever that shows up...

pglewis  LOL :D

ALL Parting shouts: Thanks again to all. This thread has been very enlightening, head swelling, and even humbling... a few notes before everything goes to PM:

on Lumber: No master-limiting or mastering-compression took place at all. The version you have was directly encoded from the source mixdown wave...

The mix is loud because it was mixed loud (and in some cases, too loud... the clipped tom-toms are a big no-no  ;)) I managed to keep the mix loud and full in the outro (only) by pushing the faders to where the balances sounded right, and where they clipped slightly. Then, at each clip, went and did small adjustments to EQ/levels to compensate and put it all into automation...

This is, again, an unfinished product... about 80%... the vision is only partly there. Some good background vox, and some whacky fx and panning would round it out... with a more detailed and careful mix. Thanks for bearing with this boxy-sounding roughie.

---

Currently working on about 5 songs; one is a cover tune, another is an original (nearly done)... it is much more mellow and sad than Lumber, tho... the other three are just early versions of things I wrote in the past, and am finally re-recording... THEN I can start writing some new stuff...

Enough about me... this place is about YOU GUYS :D I love this place; great hangout. I thought today that truly I feel part of a "scene"... a "virtual music scene"... very much like a local city's music scene, without the urine-soaked clubs, cigarette smoke, and cheapo bathroom condom machines ;) It's a birthplace of sorts for some really great musicians/artists; we get to see it all happen from the front row, and even be a part of it. Some of us are still developing, others are vets from their own real music scenes. It's awesome being able to associate with you guys, and share a few musical ideas.

LONG LIVE HR.COM!!! :D:D:D:D

I don't dislike the bass guitar, but it's a little hard to hear so I'll have a more solid opinion when the drums and bass line up. That's important to me. Drums and Bass are sort of a foundation that have to be in line with each other for me to 'feel' a song.
