Just an suggestion, don't set-up your studio in a corner. I did initially and found that against a flat wall is better for mixing/monitoring. Check out the "studio building and disply" forum for more info.
 
i really recommend the alesis multitrack usb series...i have the 12 channel verson and its been really nice to work with. It comes bundled with cubase le which isnt as good as cubase sx or se but its a start...and since its usb you dont have to worry about getting any pci sound cards or anything
 
but if you go my route.. since you have windows you may have to download a 3rd party AISO driver due to latency
