Though I would like to say that the information inside is definitely useful - somewhat specific, but great for putting one in the frame of mind of a salesperson - which is what we need to be become to get ahead in this.

Thanks for posting, though the reception here would have been a little bit less chilly if you'ld made it clear that you were harvesting emails.

The reception here is always chilly.

It's pretty obvious what I am doing, but it's not "harvesting emails." I'm simply building a list of people who get the PDF, so I'll be able to let them know when the next issue comes out.

You guys should do this with the free mp3 downloads you give out. It's just smart business.

I don't agree.

It's obvious to most of us, yes, but you didn't outright say it, did you?

What?!? Funny. You state that you're not "harvesting emails" and then go on to describe "harvesting emails."

Maybe. Many people don't like giving their info just to hear a song, though. I always gave bogus info to MP3.com. Also, if I collected email addresses and sent out emails without letting people know ahead of time that I'm doing so, I would expect to be called a spammer. I would be a spammer, in fact.

OK...
To keep in an open-minded way, I sent for the info. It is actually a pretty good article. I find it ironic that you are harvesting emails for future communication (that many will label as spam) without outright stating that you are doing so, and yet warn people in bold, all-capital type "PLEASE DO NOT ADD ME TO YOUR EMAIL LIST." Why not? I only want to let you know about my future offers. :D

Anyway, since an explicit expression of permission to post this document was made in both the email and the document, here is a nice, friendly, non-email-harvesting link to the information, which, by the way, was already posted to a linkable webspace anyway.

Cheers.

Christopher,

Thanks for posting a link to the file. Yes, exactly what I am asking people to do, so feel free to pass it out not only here but anywhere you see fit.

For those who want to just download the information, the link above works fine. For those who want to make sure they get the info on future issues though, email dave18-56550@autocontactor.com to get on the list.

Regarding adding me to an email list, my request is that people send me stuff to be reviewed via postal mail. I'm more than willing to consider something for review in the Sausage Factory, but it does me no good to get "spray and pray" info on your gig in Chunky, Mississippi (or wherever else) if I'm not in the area. Makes sense, right?

It's all good. Offering a service in exchange for permission to contact is a pretty simple, safe, acceptable way to market a product. Ask marketing author (and record label owner) Seth Godin... he'll tell ya.

Ahhh...finally somebody on here gets it.

You guys should listen to Ryan because he's a smart guy.

Ah...Tag-Team Spamming! A totally new Olympic event!:D :D :D

Hah. I've never met David and have never worked with him. Maybe someday...

Maybe you could do some "mastering" for him! Your "mastering" studio is quite impressive!:D

Why do you have to be such an asshole, Bob?

Some people take this business very seriously and are trying to do something. From what I've seen from you, all you do is post smartass one-liners.

If I'm wrong, let me know. Do you have a web site up? Anything on CD Baby?

"Why do you have to be such an asshole, Bob?"

Personal attacks? Why - you're a brave little poof, aren't you Davey? I doubt you would say that to my face. Besides, I thought you were the expert on assholes, no?:D

My credibility is not in question here. I've been in this "business" since before you were born, you insignificant little twit. This is a Home Recording Forum, not your personal fish pond. There are some talented kids here, and you will not be allowed to ply them with your wiley scam, as long as I draw breath.

Have a nice day.

"I've been in the business for 20 years and now I'm off to my job at the bowling alley..."

I talk about guys like you in my promotions. You should get on my mailing list.

Your credibility is in question here. You've crowned yourself the resident expect on what the legitimate music business is, so how about telling us all why we should listen to you?

I'm not selling anything here, Davey. You're the one with the Steps To Stardom Plan. This is a community of talented writers and performers, and you are sorely out of place here. The sole purpose of your pathetic existence is flim-flamming unsuspecting kids out of their hard-earned sheckles, and you're not even very good at it. At least Laskow has the class to stay out of spamming BBS sites. But then, you're not Laskow, are you? He has actual CREDITS in the Biz, where you have non-existent acts on defunct labels, and a patter that would make a carney blush.
Your biggest problem is not knowing when to quit and fade into the background until the "heat" wears off. Didn't they teach you that in your Marketing class, Davey?

Pity.

hey david,

...although i usually shy away from the corporate side of the industry as much as is possible, i'm curious as to what kind of resources you guys at kathode ray have? i network and tour with a lot of independent artists, including holly figueroa of indiegrrl and many of the artists that she works with. i see you list them on your links, and i'm curious as to how you work with them.
i also noticed that you are in nashville, and i'm wondering if you cross paths with bob goldstone. he was most helpful on my last tour with contacts and an instore. i'm always looking for more people to network with, and i run in an evergrowing circle of artists across the us that all help each other out.
i'm wondering what companies like yours can do for artists that are already out there doing it on the diy tip?

I on on the Indiegrrl mailing list and know Holly, but have not done anything with them for years. I did street promotion on one of their Nashville shows around 1998 or so, but that was via Vivian Slade.

Yeah, Bob is great. Tower has been really supportive of 2NMC and he has been an incredible resource. Really cool guy who loves music and takes it very seriously.

These are the artists that we like to work with. You may be already making a living, but chances are that you're leaving money on the table. It's like a company that is making money, but is not nearly as efficient as it could be. We come in, show you ways you can tighten things up, and you go away with to earn more money while doing less work. And because you've already got a lot going, it's easy to see the results.

Hope this helps. If not, feel free to followup with more questions.

thanks david,

... i appreciate your answers, and i checked out your links. looks like your services might be helpful to certain artists out there, but i'm probably on a different path.
upon more research, i did have this thought. with all due respect, why not use your time on this forum to simply answer some questions for newbies to this crazy business (i have seen where you have done this many times). there is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to build up business, but i'm not sure that this is the place to do it. it might set an uncomfortable precedence. this is a place where likeminded artists freely share info with each other, and shy away from promoting themselves and their companies.
i wish you the best of luck with your endeavors, and hope you are not offended by my suggestion.

What path are you on?

As far as answering questions or giving advice, isn't that what this post is?
