Hi, guys

Sorry that I haven't been checking out the tunes here as much as I would like to lately due to the busy semester.... Anyway, here is a tune I wrote/tracked over the summer in Taiwan (it's in in English), but haven't had the time to get it properly mixed yet. I would just like to get some feeback on the song-writing and obvious things to look out for mixing-wise.
Any comments or suggestions will be really great, thanks!

This probably won't mean a thing to you guys, but let me make sure the credits go to the right people here:

Vocal: Rebecca
Piano: Rebecca and myself
Drum: Mike
guitar: me:)

Neat song...very "Pink Floyd" like until the vocals come in. Surprised me with that high-alto/soprano voice. Some timing issues with the drummer.

Indeed sounds like Pink Floyd! It's a good song, just need some adjusts on the drum and I think the bass could be a little more in the front.

OK, lets listen

The piano attacks are a little hard for my taste in the opening--hitting the keys with a little too much speed. A lighter touch would sound better.

The vocals all wonderful. I love the alto voice. The drummer has a few problems. The piece could use a little more bottom end.

The guitars are nice, perhaps a little too dark sounding around 3:20.

The vocals cutting in a 3:38 are truely inspired! wonderful stuff.
The song really comes together here. guitar solo is nice--might need a little smoothing out.

Piano after the break is very nice. Don't bury the alto voice in the end--bring it out a little more. Lose the piano drum ending, let the song end with the voice.

Great piece--terrific potential with just a little rework. Very nice work!!

Nice piano sounds. Cool harmonies. Nice singer. Good flangy guitar. The instrumentation through 3:13-3:36 is just terrific. The vocals right after that are sweet.

Little drum goofup at 1:35 or so?

The vocals lack just a little bit of midrange definition. They're covered just a bit by the piano

The cymbal attack is a little harsh and they're a little loud in general.

The low harmonies at 2:34 or so have some trouble cutting through.

You probably could have ended it at 4:53.

Nice.

Oops!

*bows head in shame*

Sorry, A1A2. I totally forgot about this.

No hard feelings I hope?

wow, you guys are wonderful! Thanks for the suggestions and kind words. I know the drummer isn't the best player in the world, in fact, just a beginner, but, working with a real drummer was a lot of fun!

ChristopherM,
yeah, I really need to break away from the Floyd style...
People have been telling me that for years:( thanks for listening tho.

BloodShark,
there is no bass yet, maybe the whole mix will sound heavier when I get it recorded. thanks for checking out

sloop,
I agree with the attacks on piano, gotta go back to the midi files and rework them. I'm glad you dig the vox, it was a real pleasure to work with a good singer. Although this song isn't her thing (she is an opra singer), she pulled it off nicely. Too bad the timming issue on the drums made her seem like she was off-beat.

TripleM,
didn't like the ending? We had a debate on this issue, too, but I pretty forced everyone to keep it :D Good call on the piano masking vocal part, I will really need to tweak them once I decide on the piano patch. Thanks for listening!

Pedullist,
Remember we had a deal? If your schedule doesn't get better by Oct, we would call it quits. It's all good, man, I understand:)

Again, thanks everyone for listening and the helpful suggestions

Al

Some courage this guy A1A2 has, huh? What an arrangement. Very ambitious....the female vocals are very surprising as well.

Reminds me of Queen, in a strange way.

I'm also surprised how this has grown (I remember the first piano demo). Still love the chords.

Drummer does interesting things I think, creatively. Sure, he lacks technique and has some timing problems, especially for a difficult piece like this. But it's definitely a good job for a beginner...

I would have to ditto on most of the comments, but I like the ending. It adds interest to the song. In general, it is a very interesting tune with alot of changes, and that's what makes a longer song work.

This reminds me very much of "Us and Them", melodically and rhythmically.

Watch some intonation problems I think on the piano around the :45 mark.

Really enjoyed the writing and themes. The sweet fem vox are a really nice choice.

I feel the Queen reference at 1:45, when the vox harmony comes in.

Ahh.. more feel changes at the ending, this song just keeps giving surprises.

The ahh vox 3:50 are really well done, though i felt some timing problems in the drums around there.

Tasty lead at the end.

Some really nice writing and arrangement here.

Hey what's with the file name?? "for_pedullist.mp3" Did you promise to do bass on this Peddy?

I'll agree with a little Queen feel. I thought the production was very nice. The combination of her very cool vocals and the other instruments was very nice. The arrangement was exciting. I was always looking for the next turn.

I though the mix was pretty good. I thought some of the harmonies could come up and the cymbals down.

I really enjoyed the drum sound. Nice job recording there. I thought the drummer had some very good ideas, but the experience to pull it off is not there. The timing problems really distracted me in many places. Sorry.

Very nice stuff A1!

Hi Al,
This is a cool tune.........

nits...
Kick sounds muffled.....drum performance could be tighter at the beginning..
vocals could be clearer....hard to make out the lyrics in a few places...
The young lady has an awesome voice but, I wonder if the tune warrants a deeper (lower) register.....when she starts to sing again at the 5:00 minute mark...it is so much clearer...(better?)
kudos...
great arrangement and performance (save the drums...and they aint that bad really...)I especially like the piano parts man...

Take it easy,
Joe

Good stuff, sounds like a kind of "epic" song, similar to Queen or Floyd. How did you record it? :)

Pink Floyd's in the house! Ooops......I meant A1A2. :)

Nice music......verynice song.......I like's it. The girl can sing.....reminds me of one of the singers on Rocky Horror Picture Show.

The issues have been pointed out so I'll just enjoy the music.

I'd agree with most of the comments. It's got some cool stuff but the drums get a little distracting. You might try taking the best parts and just looping them.

Cool vocal harmonies.

Peddy,
I can't remember which version I sent you, but thx for the kind words, very encouraging!

Blue Cyberia,
I'm really glad you liked the ending! I had to fight with the band to make them play the 3/4 ending. No one thought it would work...

Khompewtur,
Ah~Us and Them, one of my favirot Floyd song. I have to admit this song kicks off in a very similiar way as that song tho. Yeah, Ped was gonna try to add bass to this tune, but his schedule got too busy at that time.

skids,
I'm surprised people find Queens in this tune, I only know one song from them, the very complex one with awsome harmonies, is that what you guys are refering to?? That song was written by some mad genius people!

joro,
you nailed the problems I was going thru. I only had 1 pair of OH mics for the drum, so I had almost no kick sound. Had to bounce them onto 1 track and gate out everything but the kick, boost some lows, and brought it up in the mix. Guess that didn't work out very well...About her voice, you are absolutely right, I wrote this song while singing an octave lower, and thought she will be ok in an octave higher, boy, I was wrong, but since the guitars/piano were recorded already, the singer had to suffer to make it work.

CanopuS,
another reference to Queens? Mind telling me which song this one reminds you of?
Vocal>C1>Mackie>Delta66>Acid>mixed in Sonar
Drum>C1+AT4041 for OH>Mackie pres
Midi piano>Cubase>Edited in Sonar>roland xp30 patch
Guitar>strat>joemeek>pod pro
thanks for listening!

Lt. Bob,
I promis the next one won't be as Floydish:D!! thanks for checking out

Tex,
Since it's my first time recording drums, I would like to keep it as real as possible. I will just have to work with a better drummer next time. Thanks for the suggestion tho.

Keep it coming, you guys are awsome!

Al

Not my cup of tea but very nice mix and good tune
Reminds me more of Rennasaince(SP?) than floyd.
Keep up the good work.

i dont know pink floyd. For me, it had a coldplay feel to the intro.

Now I want to hear the vocals. Not bad. Not bad at all. vocalist seems to have an operatic pedigree.

Song is one I would not mind listening to at a production, but I cant hear it being a single. Very cool piece

Hence a Wildcard score of : C+ ( the ending was REALLY good, but it took too long to get there. The O joy section was AMAZING . Had the song been built around that, it would have been a wildcard)

This is way cool. There was a few things that held it back a bit.

The drumming sounded a bit disjointed here and there and the ride cymbal was mixed too loud IMO.

Vocals need to be more present in some places. When they first come in it sounds like the singer is standing behind the rest of the band instead of in front.

ya, as I listen now, yanking the reigns on the drums will make a huge difference.

That chorus sounding section around the 4/5 mark gave me chills.
