mr. green christmas
Hey,

Here I have a cover of a flaming lips song called waiting for a superman. Not sure where things stand with this mix. Some things about it I like...others not so much.

Please check it out and let me know about any glaring issues. Still trying to cram as much as I can into 8 cassette tracks...starting to get a little frustrated with the limitations but digging the sound for the most part...

Thanks,
Pete

Very cool interpretation of a great song. Man, I haven't heard this tune in years.

I think your octave-down vocals work but my first reaction was that they might need to be a bit louder in the mix.

Other than that, thumbs up.

Sounds pretty good. I don't know the original. The only thing I don't like is the drums. Too mono and repetitive. There's no life to them. Mix levels seem good. Vocals may be a little too dry compared to the rest of the mix.

Agree with Greg about the drums, Pete. They could use some panning.
Otherwise, sounds pretty good to me. Don't knbow the original, but I like what you did with it, nice performance.

Joey :):):):)

Thanks. I have really gotten into this album lately. I highly recommend the soft bulletin to anyone who hasn't heard it. There is a lot of interesting stuff going on there. I went for something faster and simpler.

Thanks Greg. You have no idea how much time I spent getting those drums to sound lifeless. Seriously I spent a ton of time processing and tweaking on the way in, only to find they didn't fit that well with the mix and then felt the need to eq extensively. Not good. Lesson learned (hopefully).

Thank you joey. I could still pan the drums more as it is a stereo drum machine take with L & R, but I fear the sound of the drums themselves may be a big part of the issue. Not sure. I want get some kind of acoustic kit bad.

Yup...other than a little life to the drums, I think it sounds good. Maybe bring the vox up a tad. Just a bit tho.

Nicely done man. :drunk:

Thanks dude. :)

I've been working on the drums (actually the whole mix) tonight and despite some pretty substantial tweaks...the end results so far have been more or less the same...pretty frustrating. I may just zero out the whole thing and start over, but I'm thinking more and more that the drum tracks I captured intially just aren't that good.

trying again - remix

Ok, I tried to do some of things suggested here and remixed the thing last night. With only a kick/snare/HH combo, it was difficult to get much of a stereo spread, but the drums do sound a little more lively - although still not where I wish they were sonically by a long shot.

I messed with the vocal processing a bit too. Does the bass guitar kind of get lost now? If anyone can give it another listen and let me know if there is any improvement I'd greatly appreciate it.

New mix here and at the link at the top of the thread. Thanks.

The drum panning really made a difference. It sounds better to me now. I like your style of earthy recording. Nice job :D

Thank you squibble. It's always nice to get feedback after making revisions :).

I think it's a very cool tune. I also think the drums are a good part of the experience. Keep it simple.

Thanks dodge. Generally I would not be accused of over-complicating things, although I long for a 16-24 track format of some kind, so some day I may have to keep it simple by choice rather than necessity :)

Sounds cool, not familiar with the original....I like the vocals......drums seem a little loud imho, which kind of emphasizes the repetitiveness....

Thanks queepy. I think you may be right about the drums. I think I got a better sound with the remix, but they did come forward quite a bit and that snare is just relentless. This is the kind of tune that I could've played drums on to better effect if I had an acoustic kit...maybe someday soon.
