Hey Alan...just wondering if you have any idea of the price the VTB-2 will be in Australia?

Well you will have to do the conversion, but the retail should be $999.99 here in the USA with a Street price of $800.00 or so.

So, we always hope that it is about the same plus any import costs of shipping, duty and taxes.

Hi Alan. I have a question about the VTB-2. Could there be a non-digital option? On one hand, I like the focus on the good analog features you're putting into the pre, but I've already settled on the converter end.

Well 4 Jensen Transformers are not cheap....no matter how much quantity you buy. If we use a Chinese transformer, we can hit the lower mark. Does this matter?

Hi Alan, What would be the difference if you use a Chinese transformer? Would there be a sonic difference? A problem of QC? $800 will probably turn off a lot of potential customers, especially when you can get 4 Sytek pres for a little less. When the Peavey 2-channel tube unit was still availible it was going for $650 new. Of course neither may have all of the bells and whistles that the VTB-2 has, (I don't know but am assuming it has EQ and/or Compressor and other features), but for a serious home studio on a budget.......... I'd rather see cuts in other areas of the unit to try and keep it at a street price of $650 or less. Of course that's just my opinion. I'm sure you've researched the market and know what people want.

if this unit with the jensens will
perform at or above the Grace which i think are 500.00 and single channel, then you will have no problem with a 799
street price for a dual channel pre, and from what has been said this unit will
have wayyyy more features, so if the quality in performance is there so will the

Well this is what I think as well, $799.99 is not a bad price when you consider the Jensens and all the digital features on top of the massive features it has planned.

alba359 makes a good point as the Chinese transformers are not bad, but if I want to make any headway into the upper end market, it needs to have the Jensens.

I can tell you the Chinese and the OEP's from the UK are pretty darn good, but it goes back to that magic name...

So...what's a guy to do?

If the Chinese transformers are sonically good as the Jensens, (and would bring the price signigantly down,) would it be possible to make two units and let the buyers that are compelled to buy brand names get the Jensens and the others who just want a good sound get the other? I've got several SP mikes that were made using Chinese parts that sound great. Thanks, Don

Alan, what about other respected manufacturers such as Lundahl or Haufe? They should be a bit less expensive than the Jensens, yet still very good. Did you consider those?

We have tested many of them of them so far. The others are not that less than Jensen. It is only when you get to the UK OEP and the Chinese ones that the savings starts to show up.

Well, they are different. They had some very nice sounding Xformers, but again it is going against the grain sometimes to build something for everyone to want.

The build quality is good, especially if you spec it out with the right wire and guage before they build them...

How would you rate the A/D converters? Are they going to equal those on the Apogee Mini-Me? If so, then you probably have a real winner on your hands, as this is way more than $800. If the converters are only the equal of an average (semi-pro) sound card like the M-audio delta 66 I have, then a version without the converters and digi outputs for $200 less may be more tempting for those who already have good converters. No-one wants to pay for functions they will never use!
