hi people i'm confused cos im about to blow $1000 approx for either units and i dont know which is a better choice for a singer/songwriter/guitar player who works a lot from home but would like to make very convincing demos with electronic / acoustic instruments w vocals and maybe keep bulk of the work as preproduction for a larger studio to finsh up? please help as im really confused.....thanx y'all

Neither 1! Blow your money on a Akai or a Korg!
Even better, Buy an Alesis Adat and save $$$$$$!

I have a VS-1680, and although the destruction manual leaves a lot to be desired, I've been pretty happy with the unit. I think for the money, it's excellent value, and now as the prices have come down (getting rid of old stock, making way for the new inventory -VS-1880, and VS-2480), there are real bargains to be had w.r.t. the VS-1680. I've seen them on e-Bay for less than $1500. I may even get another one.

Good Luck!

I think Musicians Friend has the VF16 selling for $800. That's a good price for a 16-track recorder.

I still would buy the Akai DPS16, Korg D1600, or Roland VS1880. They are more capable machines and better long-term investments.

The Korg box I think beats the roland. It's cheaper in the long run too. Won't have to spend 4-500$ on roland's burner. Not too mention the korg is uncompressed audio. The roland compresses it. I just never liked anything we recorded with a roland. The korg does a killer job. It also lets you export each individual track to .wav. If you're looking to let other people do the post-production, that feature should be a big plus.
The only akai I've heard was an old dps12.....things sounded great, but I couldn't stand the interface on it. It looks like akai has updated it quite nicely though, so don't rule those out. Just do your homework before you spend that cold cash.

Good luck,
Mike

vf 16

i've been doing a bit of research on digital multi-tracker's, and there is a hell of a lot more to the vf-16 than what they let on at the fostex website.... not a great site, but anyhow it came down to the vf-16 and dps 24 for me, but i am fairly certain that i will go for the vf-16... oh by the way i'm pretty sure that each track on the vf-16 can beexported to a pc in .wav format so that will help with external post production, i will probably be using it with cubase for my post.... another thing is the price! damn good value! especially considering it now comes with a cd-r... i have spoken to a few people and they all seem to think that the unit has enough onboard effects for full post-production.... sorry if this post is irrelevant, and if i jump from topic to topic....i get a bit like that! hope this helps!

my bad

i just got e-mailed some details from my dealer.... scary stuff... the cd-r option on the vf-16 (actually he said vf-160, dunno what this is about! new model or something, maybe his typo) was $900 australian (about $450usd) extra.....sorry if i misled in any way shape or form.... if anyone can clear up this over load of (mis)information please do so..... i feel like such a tool.....

thanx mr.q

Saw a Korg D16 for 599.00 clearence at Mars, Now thats the best deal Ive seen in a long time.

For what it's worth, I've owned the VS880 since they came out and can get some incredible stuff out of it. I've also reviewed most of the newer stuff in light of getting a 2480 down the road. Based on my research, I have found the Roland models to be as good as or better than most other similarly priced models.
