Hi guys - If anyone wd care to listen to Candy Cane Lane I wd appreciate ideas on how to improve the vocal delay/verb settings. I only use Cakewalk GT Pro's FX - in the aux bus fully wet & make settings at the return. The choices are limited - ie, no reverb predelay. Thanks:

Hi there,
Since you do not have the ability to set predelay on your reverb plug I would be EXTREMELY cautious in using any on the vocal. I often use little reverb in any song I mix...sometimes on a doubled vox or a part I want to bring attention to.
You would be much better served downloading the freeware SIR vst plug and get a few packs of impulse files at the noisevault.com I personally used the PCM91 samples there for all my mixes, especially "vocal magic" in the the hall settings. Once again, its free and blow the doors off any plug including Waves Renverb.

Over time, I find myself using less and less verb. Now, Im at the point where you would be hard pressed to find more than a tad of reverb on any one track at any one time. Check out my music at http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=1147&alid=-1

Both songs have hardly any reverb anywhere. Neither Vocal has verb but they still manage to sit in the mix with being in your face. The secret is delay. DELAY IS YOUR FRIEND. Use it whenever you can instead of reverb to create a sense of space. I often use a delay timed to the tracks tempo. The verse vox might have a shorter delay using 8th of 16ths. Alot of times I want the chorus a different feel so I'll use longer delays and quarter notes, it really depends on what the song desires.

I hope this helps. Your recording will improve drastically once you drop the verb and really get the warm fuzzies with delay.

thanks

Great post - thanks. I'll work w it tomorrow & listen to yr music. Unfortunately GT Pro doesn't accept plugins. I know I should trade up but I'm not that great at computers & increasingly find myself learning software & the music suffers.

yeah, welcome to the great compromise. I've been there too, its incredibly to get so caught up in recording aspect that you forget whats most important of all...the song. You might wanna check out Kristal sequencer software. Its free, simple to use, and allows vst plugins. Do a google search for it.

Thanks again

Yr music sounds good - somewhere bet Nirvana & Prince!?! I'll check out Krystal. Someone told me audacity also. this is already geting more complicated!! Do you know Traktion by Mackie? It's free now & everything Mackie does is well-done. I started learning it but didn't find it as simple as they said.

SIR plug in

later... OK I'm getting started finally w plugins after a little trial & error. I dnloaded the pcm91 files, put them in the same VST folder as the SIR plug in, but no files show up when I click on presets. Obviously I missed something. Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks
