Thanks...that is definitely worth looking into. The noise can definitely be an issue with the old MPA's if you use a dynamic mic and high gain FWIR. On the other hand, I would imagine the price of the older MPA's will be dropping soon! As it stands now I either have to use a dynamic mic or a stage/hand-held condenser, because I'm getting too much room with the AT3035...even singing facing into a clothes closet.
 
Here's two dynamics and the AT3035 condenser through the emu 0404 pre. It's the second test...the one posted today, not the first one posted a few days ago. It's not the greatest singing, but I was just testing the mics and not attempting to make a gold record. Are any of these mics useable with the emu pres? Naturally they sound much better after I add some compression, eq, and reverb. Would an upgraded MPA, a DMP3 or a RNP make a noticeable improvement? I tried the same mics with the Aphex 107, but I actually preferred the 0404 this time. The full mix of that tune can be heard on my MySpace page for comparison. It's the 1st song.
