Well thanks for all the help, those that helped anyway. And everyone who was a dickhead, thank you too.. Appreciate it, really, thanks for the help. Thanks everyone.

Where should I get the SM7? What's the difference between regular version and the B version? Will I need it, or will it be of use if there is one?

Does it run of Phantom Power, will I need a mic pre?

your welcome i think.

No, it is a dynamic mic, you will not need phantom power.
Yes, you need a preamp to bring the signal up to line level before it goes into your recorder

wv- the only difference between SM7 and SM7B is they changed the armature slightly, the fork like thing the mic hangs on, same mic. No need for phantom power, it's a dynamic mic. Do you need a preamp? Every mic needs a preamp. The question is, do you need an outboard preamp? That depends on whether whatever you're using to record has decent preamps in it. Most recorders and soundcards don't. Mixers have preamps in them, although usually not great ones. The mic level output of a mic *always* needs to be raised to line level to record it.-Richie

What's an outboard preamp? So do I need a preamp or what? Will this go directly into my soundcard?

If you want a mic with a bit of presence (from about 2K up), the pick up the Studio Projects C1

Let's not get him started on the 2K stuff just yet. :D

An outboard preamp is a preamp that isn't built into what ever your recording with. I assume you are recording with a computer.
And I'm taking a wild guess, and I'm assuming that you are using a consumer grade (crappy) sound card. (to find out more about sound cards do a search on here, or I can just save some people the trouble and tell you to go out and buy an M-audio audiophile 24/96) but I strongly recomend doing a lot of research and buying a nice sound card.
Remember, the sound you get will only be as good as the weakest link in your chain. Meaning; if you have a crappy soundcard and an 8 billion dollar mic, guess what, your getting 20 dollars worth of sound.

Most consumer grade sound cards do come with preamps built into them on the microphone input, but ALL of them are crappy. NEVER RECORD INTO THE MICROPHONE INPUT. Always record into the line input.

If you plug in your microphone to the line input you will notice that you can barely hear anything.
"Why?"
Becuase there is not preamp there to boost your signal up to line level.
"Why don't I just record into the record input?"
I already covered that, stop asking stupid questions.

So, yes you need a preamp, unless you want to use the ones that come with your soundcard (if it has any at all). And if you do use the ones in your soundcard then I would suggest using the microphone that came with your computer, you would save money that way becuase your only as good as the weakest link. Goodbye!

So I will need a preamp, if I get the SM7? Where can I get a nice soundcard? The only problem is with my souncard is...

I have a SB Auidgy 2, I use a 5.1 speaker setup, I want to be able to use that, while recording and the playback of it, also through gaming, and those M-Audios don't have 5.1 jacks on them do they? Front, Center, Rear...

What should I do then, I have a 5.1 setup, has 3 cables, not 1.

Just keep your soundblaster card in there. You can use both. I don't know how serious you are about recording, but the soundblaster audigy 2 your using may suit you just fine, you shoud find out what card will best fit your needs by doing searches on here.

My suggestion would be (if you really have to have that 5.1) keep the audigy, and buy a card with better a/d converters and use the better card for recording purposes and the audigy for gaming and movies and stuff like that.

my ultimate suggestion would be, to get a better card altogether, get rid of the soundblaster, and dedicate yout pc for audio. But again, I dont know how serious you are about recording.

about the 5.1 itself,
I would not suggest recording and especially mixing in 5.1 surround. You should buy a decent pair of monitors and get the hang of mixing in stereo before you get into the whole 5.1 realm. I'm sure it takes years of practice to get a good mix with 5.1 and your completely wasting your time if you don't even have good monitors hooked up to the 5.1 surround (or good stereo monitors for that matter). Besides, how many people are going to be listening to your stuff on 5.1, kinda pointless. There is a reason the M-Audio's don't do 5.1, becuase they are for recording.

Before you need to know where to get a soundcard, your going to need to know what you need in a soundcard. I researched soundcards for months before i bought one, and I changed my mind about a million times.
I finally settled on an Aardvark direct pro 24/96 becuase I didn't need more then 4 inputs/outputs, It has 4 built in preamps (really decent ones, not like you will find in consumer grade cards) and it has midi in/out. I knew thats what i wanted from a card before i went to buy becuase I know there is nothing worse then buying something and reallizing that it doesn't do what you want. You might even want to stick with the soundblaster, although I dont recomend it.

Go to the search button and start reasearching!

Do those big ass monitors have a 1/4 plug that they go into a soundcard with? Listen, I just need a soundcard that I plug 2 or more monitors into, and a mic.. What would be a good budget soundcard for that?

How much are descent monitors, I don't need top grade pro shit, but descent and above is nice.. Let me know..

Also, will I be able to use the audigy for gaming, and the whatever for recording, and the monitors for playback while recording? Let me know, this is confusing..

I don't see what the big difference is in 5.1 and a say a 2 channel setup.. You mean mix in that enviroment, ex. the speakers.. Wut you mean mix? Record/Playback? What is the big deal between surround and just regular stereo, only more speakers, and the sound is all around you, if not that, there's more... Is it possible to hook up a new soundcard, hook the monitors to that, record and playback through that card, then game and listen to music through the other?
