What's an outboard preamp? So do I need a preamp or what? Will this go directly into my soundcard?
An outboard preamp is a preamp that isn't built into what ever your recording with. I assume you are recording with a computer.
And I'm taking a wild guess, and I'm assuming that you are using a consumer grade (crappy) sound card. (to find out more about sound cards do a search on here, or I can just save some people the trouble and tell you to go out and buy an M-audio audiophile 24/96) but I strongly recomend doing a lot of research and buying a nice sound card.
Remember, the sound you get will only be as good as the weakest link in your chain. Meaning; if you have a crappy soundcard and an 8 billion dollar mic, guess what, your getting 20 dollars worth of sound.
Most consumer grade sound cards do come with preamps built into them on the microphone input, but ALL of them are crappy. NEVER RECORD INTO THE MICROPHONE INPUT. Always record into the line input.
If you plug in your microphone to the line input you will notice that you can barely hear anything.
"Why?"
Becuase there is not preamp there to boost your signal up to line level.
"Why don't I just record into the record input?"
I already covered that, stop asking stupid questions.
So, yes you need a preamp, unless you want to use the ones that come with your soundcard (if it has any at all). And if you do use the ones in your soundcard then I would suggest using the microphone that came with your computer, you would save money that way becuase your only as good as the weakest link. Goodbye!
