At the moment I'm using a 58 to record vocals, with some Samson CO2s in the background as backup (not been very usefull but thought I'd give it a go anyway)... the 58 (as we all know) only picks up vocals that are close to the diaphram to a decent recording extent, which means I get plenty of "P"s and "S"s in the mix and the singers keep moving around the mic like hell.

So I want a condenser I can hang from my roof, with a pop shield.

My budget is around £100 at the moment - I could stretch to £200 if it ups the quality much more. Any suggestions?

I've been pleasently suprised with my C2000B. It hasn't really proven to be a stand-out on any one application, but also never dissapoints either. I also have some limited experience with the NT1A. It seemed well suited for male vocals in the low tenor to baritone range.

But with either, I would recomment a pop filter of some sort for vocal recording.

Iknow you said you want a condensor, but most people recommend the shure sm-7,sm-7a, or sm-7b for hard rock and metal.

I think you could probably get one used for £200 maybe?

a 58 will work great if you have a decent pre - unless the one you have is trashed

the shure sm7 is a killer microphone... the drive and screaming singers can grab it to record and you'll have no problem with that. Lots of metal bands use it, like Metallica.
you'll have it and use it forever!

If you really want a compressor I would suggest getting a cheap one first to see if it makes a big difference. I liked by Studio Projects B1 fine, but the C3 I like much more.

However, I think you may be surprised how much a LDC picks up. It flies in the face of your question ("...I want a condenser...") but I would also strongly suggest an SM7.

I wonder if hanging an SM7 from the ceiling with a pop shield might force your singers to hold their head still. You might be able to try that with your current 58. Just put up a pop screen about 6 inches from the mic and tell the singer that you want his face right up on the screen... almost touching it.

Good luck!

Thanks for all the advice.

I don't seem to be able to find an SM7 anywhere. Are they not on general sale or something? Or have they stopped manufacturing them?

Yeah, but I just can't find one to buy in the UK! Tried GAK, Dolphin, Ebay...

Hey Spike, is this it??

That sites German based and pretty good by all accounts. I don't even know if that's the mic you want though.
Indeed it is! I was recommended that site on my main forum today actually! Bit more than I can afford right now, but I've read that it's a good mic for my application, so I'm gonna save up for it and use my SM58 for now!

Thanks very much to everyone :)

Alright, I've found an SM7 I can order AND I've also found an AT 4050 that's in my price range.

Which one should I get? God, this mic malarky is always a hard choice...

Between the two, for the purpose you described, I'll vote for the SM7.

Now you have a vote from a guy you don't know... that should help loads huh?

there is no such thing as a mic for rock vocals, rap vocals or even opra vocals. yes peeps have a favorite mic they would use on a certain genre of music but thats personnal taste, it's not like on the packaging of the my it says Rock Vocal Microphone.

I don't see a lot of positive comments about the AKG Perception 200, but I've been using a pair of them for some time now and highly recommend them...

Wow...

OK, so far I've recorded vocals (nasal and all out rock / metal screaming), hi-hat AND guitar cab with it.

God damn I LOVE this mic... very, VERY nice... thanks to everyone who recommended it to me!

Still considering getting a condenser as well though... thr AT4050 looks apealing for my price range.
