According to Prepal a used Otari MX5050B III can be had for around $528. And a fairly new one should be a lot easier to find than a new example of any other half track.
 
Eh,...

If you're hung up on getting brand new gear, then the 424mkIII is my recommendation. ;)

hey i never said i wanted to get anything new, anything that works best for me to get the job done and SOUND IS THE MOST IMPORTANT thing to me, not really whether its new or old, so someone fill me in the tascam 32 and how much would it be and is it available or not?
 
There are a few on eBay right now.

You might also want to look into Otari and Fostex

Note: None of these decks are cheap. BUT, you can do something on them that you could never do on a multitrack. And that is make a stereo master that'll sound way fatter/warmer than anything burnt to CDR (or whatever) :cool:

Alright, if you're open to used then get yourself an open reel recorder such as a TASCAM 32 or even a 22-2 or an Otari that Mark recommends ...

... but for GODs sake, make DAMN certain (if not sure then ask us) that the deck is coming from a reliable seller, that the machine is in fine condition and THAT THE SELLER WILL PACK PROPERLY - most unfortunately do not. That is why local pickup would be advisable and checking the unit in person.

Also, picking up a TEAC 3440 would not be a bad idea as they're quite plentiful on the used market, and cheap too! (Pict attached).

This definitely has an Eminem type of influence to it. Good lyrics and performance. I'd add a bit more compression to your vocal and pull it down a little, however, to even it out with the rest of the song. Other than that it's a great piece.

Okay, reality check.

I hear like 4 parts going on in that sample clip, so I'd still recommend a 4-track recorder,... such as the Tascam 424mkIII or 34B.

If you get a 2-track, such as the Tascam 32, it limits you to 2 parts on tape, and although your dumping into the 'puter to mix, there would be very little chance you could record onto the 32 a second time, dump, and then have the first 2-tracks line up with the second 2-tracks.

You need a 4- or more- track deck. For 4 tracks, see above. For 8 tracks check the Tascam 388 or 38 w/external mixer. Recommendations above.

what do you mean 4 parts going in the sample?
and guys my problem is, it just doesnt sound 'warm' or crisp like commercial tracks, just feels like its there clear but it just has no 'mood' in the production, i tried to use one of those 'warming' plugins, but they just suck, like they dont sound good.

I think the problem stems from your mixing and usage of recording gear than it is from not having an analog recorder. I think you should focus on learning how to better use EQ, compression, reverb, mic placement and general recording techniques etc .... than trying to fix it with getting a TASCAM 32, 34 or whatever ..... which I feel would not solve anything that you are trying to accomplish. However, I'd still say getting an analog multitrack recorder (with a mixer) or the all-in-one TASCAM 388 would make the task a lot easier and more musical sounding than fucking around with a computer - sorry but this is only my opinion and this is the Analog Only forum so ...... ;)

It's actually a DAT (Digital Audio Tape). Very different to Analog. ;)

You really DO need to know exactly what you are looking for and I feel that doing some research and going over the many posts in the Analog Only forum archive will help you out immensely.
