If anyone's interested, here are a couple of clips I recorded with the XM/Rotosphere combination:

(whole song, draft mix)
(augmented with synthesizer basslines)
(augmented and solo)

Very nice. Interesting song, kinda has a Moody Blues meets Spinal Tap feel. And thats not an insult.:D:cool: Yup, the organ sounds pretty good. I wouldnt question it to be anything other than an "authentic" organ.

JP...nice music. I am going to check out the Rotosphere at a demo, maybe bring it home and try it out, you may have saved this (guitar) player alot of money. I've been hauling my ZR76 around for over 5 years and may keep it. Like I said, not an organ player, but I've sat behind a lot of the ol' 400 lb monsters and the water fall keys and drawbars are the thing...and of course the Leslie sound, thanks alot for the help.

Thanks guys, the Daniel song is one of my current favourites.
It's also a good example song for vintage keyboards, since it uses the Hammond and all three principle mellotron sounds as well (strings, flute, choir).

In case anyone is curious, the mellotron was done using the official sample CD from mellotron.com, but played back in an unusual manner - an embedded system I put together running DRDOS. The playback engine is 26KB fully inclusive and would be a lot smaller if it made more use of assembler. The sound samples are loaded from compactflash.
Having said that, I think the flute may have been done using the Roland M-VS1 instead, as the real one is difficult to keep in tune. The piano is a Triton Extreme.

jp, our band (back in 72') used the Mellotron in the studio, almost spinet like keyboard, at the time it was a moody blues sounding instrument, as they used them alot, and king crimson, who i saw live in 70' had two of them on stage, cool sounds for the time. I'm glad the vintage instruments still live on today. I remember our organist had a blast with the voicings.:)

dont know why someone would bad rap the nord it's a fav over at keyboard mag site.... for those interested in VSTi's i just got an ad from NI that their classic keys package is on sale 50% of till end of aug.... $399 good deal B4 akoustik grand and the electro pianos as well...

there are a lot of good kybd suggestions above but I would add that you don't sell off your Emu VK, I had both the VK and still have the Classic Keys module but I use it as a layering sound via midi. You can use the Roland/Nord or whatever other bd. you pic up and have it connected to the VK via midi and play with your levels. The VK has some very nice Mellotron sounds, having owned a Mellotron/B3/Wurly yrs ago and carted them around from gig to gig across Canada and the US my back sure does appreciate modern gear.
