I've got into THIS ITEM auction ... and it reminded me tabout this thread :D
well, i guess it's a simple 'power seller's' mistake, but it sure looks/(looked) humorous for the moment...
in case you don't catch it before it may get fixed, here's the image of Roberts 770 in this auction (is/was...)

anyhow... as I am searching for all sorts of AMPEX stuff and parts like on dayly base... so I was searching e-bay a minute ago for "AMPEX", and have found THIS ONE ... he he , now the funiest part was that it took me about 3 mins or so to figure out what the hell is wrong here ..lol :D .... :o :o :o :o

I have a Roberts tape deck that's identical to this, in my garage.

btw, Dave! are you saying that you keep Roberts 770X in your garage while keepping cassette portas in your climate-controlled "show-room"? :D
You're a sinner! ;)

I have more odd stuff in my garage than you can shake a stick at!

Eh,... actually on a quick check, it turns out to be a Roberts 990. It's not in quite as good condition as the 770 in the photo, but close. It has mono-fulltrack, stereo-halftrack, and stereo-quarter track heads on a rotating mount. It's kinda cool,... but,... eh,... man it's old! It's an oldie!!

So, what's up with Roberts? Were they the shit back in their day? I've noticed that they shared many design elements with old Akai's. I also have an old Akai in my garage. It's a unique model, with reel 1/4" tape and an integrated 8-track cartridge recorder/player. I know that Akai had to be the shit, in it's day!!

Okay,... I got these two "classic" tape drives as an add-on to a Fostex deal I was doing. Honestly, I had no idea what kind of decks these were, and they cost a literal fortune to ship! I have little familiarity with these units, and no documentation. I can't remember to what extent these units were ever powered up or tested. At least I know I've never powered or tested the Robers 990, as it has no line cord. Heh, heh.

Anyway,... these two units I've described could benefit from some refurbishing. I'm not sure I have the expertise to repair old toob reel decks,... and I know I don't have the time!! Lately, I've thought about having them refurbished by Vintage TX, because I think they're worth saving, in some weird way. I'd love to see both of those decks refurbished, then maybe hit Ebay for some old 8-track cartridges. Whee!!

Dr ZEE, do u think you could completely refurbish a Roberts 990 and an Akai whatever-model, or would it be fodder for some of your "frankenstereo" projects??

/DA

[EDIT] OK,... after another quick check, it seems that the Roberts 990 is identical to the Akai M-8, and the Akai I actually have is the X-1800SD "Super-Deluxe"!!

I've also just purchased copies of the M-8 & X-1800SD Operator's and Service manuals,... so there may be hope, after all!![/EDIT]

See: Akai M-8,... equivalent to Roberts 770 & 990 !!!

Yeah... grrrrrrrr I wish I was professionally trained in the field. :( :o ..especially when it comes to tubes ... I'm like doing something and triple-check every step and every move , looking over my shoulder... so not to get killed ...heh heh , and I only wish to ACTUALLY clearly know what the hell I am doing.
Dave, I can't really say what the machines like this clearly are good for. I love this stuff... but we are talking here about something that is really hard to reason with... all based on subjective matters, imho
You, know, I've mentioned it somewhere in the past... I used to have solid-state roberts machine very similar (if not exactly the same) as the akai in your post with ear-plates :) and 8-track... You know what I did to it... I simply trashed it as it was ... and it was in perfect working order. Arghhhh.... that was the time when the very first sony mini-disc decks got out ...and I've got myself one... (and was it like 600 bux or so???? something like that  ) I thought I was ahead of the time :... why keepping a "piece of useless junk"??? - What a bone-head!!!!!... :o  :o
Anyway, Dave.. as I can tell, restoring machines like this is only justifiable if you really enjoy doing it for a moment. Cleaning and shining is sort of easy ... if you have time of course..., but when it comes to actually fixing electronics and do some more sophisticated sh*t ... that's a different story. It's hard for me, because I have to search every singly piece of info ... too much headache, really
I'm working on ampex tube little machine project at the moment. What for? - Good question. I've got that thing in half working condition and with no-body(case)... cleaned it up, got the mechanics running ok, had to replace play head... then tested it and found out that it IS actually amazing piece of equipment :D ...well, for specific tasks, I guess. But it sounds great and has some sort of character to it (if I may use this kind of rhetoric here)... and most interesting part for me is, that it can be used as two chnl mic tube pre/line pre or even 4-chnl tube mixer (sort of). The damn thing got no one single transitor in it, you know :p :p :p ... that's COOL in my book :D

...so I've got my nose into and have decided to build something out of it. Bassically I've made the case, added all needed in/out(s) as front panel, added motor on/off "function" ..so I can use it just as preamp, some other smaller mods around. At the moment it's in its mid stage. Mostly all the electrical parts done and assembled.... will work on cosmetics, wood finishing and what ever may hit my brain in the process... maybe will add couple of big VUs ...gotta have them :)
I've made bunch of pics on the way... maybe some day I'll set the pages at website with some details etc... I have some working photos/charts on the server already... but nothing is organized yet...
here is: wiring mods and front in/outs panel assembling shots
play head replacement shots
I have case building photos and more... but it'll take time when I get it all organized on the server...
I'll attach a small photo here as the machine is at the moment.

Man, that's the coolest shit I've ever seen, Doc! Well, well done on the pict-diagrams! WOW!! :)

Dr Frankenstereo!

Man, that thing rocks! I am very impressed!

Analog recording is an endless & amazing dumpster dive! ;)

The Roberts/Akai restoration is pretty low on my list of fixit items. I'll look into it further after receiving the manuals, TBD.

Dave, just don'trash 'em ... try to play around when you get time and right mood. 8-tracker is fun thing... especially if you obtain some oldies to spin :), but the tube-Roberts can actually be turned into a useful tool in the studio.
One thing I'm actually looking forward in using my ampex machine is to set-it up as tube-driven tape delay unit and also combine it with mixer, digital delay (chained into feedback for delay time control) and also eq ... also I want to experiemnt with something I've never done before, but just getting fantasy ideas about, and it is - to use speaker / acoustic tricks / mics (placement etc.) back into mic-pre input as delay's feedback (instead of line out/in) ... this will inject (apply) what ever acoustic effect on every following echo-repetition.. now, think of what if you actually move mic(s)/speakers/or what ever acoustically "effective" elements during the process...and then - I don't know what the result may be ... wicked stuff ..sort of, similar to a simple trick I've used to do ...getting effect of moving/swinging bell sound, by hitting fixed on the metal rod hi-hat cymbal (it can sound like a bell), and while the mics were actually hanging and swinging around :D :D ... lol, silly stuff.
********
Just one more time, Dave... I know I'm over paranoid about this, but in case you are going to mess with tube machine (what ever you planing on doing with it) - be double careful, those things kill. I'm sure you are aware of it... but I 'm never lazy to repete this again and again... better safe than sorry.. you know
**********
hey, guys, (and , Daniel! HI! :) ) i'm glad you, guys, can dig my rough construction... :D , I'm planing on some handy work ahead... all will depend on how much time I get to play around... as always.
I have another set of photos (actually my fav part - drilling the "gold" heh heh ...)
The link to the jpg is here: ampex 950 / 1260 project: Front Control Panel designing and making
...while i was doing all this stuff I've made many photos ... I may set up some more charts (or shall I call them 'comics' :p )... maybe someday later

Again, I'm very impressed by your picts and arrow explanations etc .... Very interesting. Thanks for sharing these with us, Doc. ;)
