Hello,

I am going to be graduating from Portland State University this year in music and Recording Arts and Music Production. I want to start up a project studio. This is not a gear question but a business question. Does anyone out there with experiance in the Video Game industry have any tips or comments on how to break in?

thank you

Ive often wondered how i would go about submitting music for games.

I'm in the video game industry. Agent47 is right, it's who you know, and furthermore, most of this stuff is done in house (at least for AAA titles).

I know nothing about the video game industry, I just wanted to make a comment on the phrase "it's who you know":

Yes, a lot of the music biz is based on "who you know", but what matters more is "WHY you know them". People arent giving out jobs to their next-door-neighbors, they hire "who they know" because they have a working relationship with them and know of their skills.

I got to know a game client through a friend who is in charge if IT programming for the game. I would say that is by chance, in my case.

You can try writing in to LucasArts, Blizzard, EA etc. and see if they require your service.

Fraserhutch is right - most game music is done in-house, because the big developers like to keep a tight hold on the creative and financial side.

It would generally be the smaller houses that outsource the music work.

In my case, how I got to know my games clients: One of them is someone I met through a gamers' forum on the web, another is literally through a guy I went to school with and another is through an work ex-colleague who phoned up out of the blue with a games client for me.
