I seem to have read lots of threads talking about problems with the VIA chipsets (perhaps specific to using a Audiophile 2496) ... is this still the case? ... I'm looking to build a machine for my DAW and don't want to make a bad buy.

Anyone built a machine (for DAW use) recently? What did you use?

I would email M-Audio tech support. They'll get back to you within a day, just be specific and hopefully they can tell you what they think about it! ha.

KT133, KT133a, all those chipsets untill the KT266a which was the first to work without problems (mostly due to VIA sorting out some bugs) One of the bad bugs was with the HDD bus controller which would dump errors on the boot sector of your HDD making it unbootable.

NForce are the known to be the best at the moment for music DAW's

Stay away from Via for recording. Period.

Unless you're running Tascam, Echo, or Digidesign, in which case it works just fine.

And MOTU.

Just stay away from VIA to be safe, or find a way to test your hw configs before locking in.

I think I'm just going to go the NForce route ... I've a couple of those machines already and they work well ... but then I have a couple Vias that work fine too ... just none of them are running audio stuff beyond mp3s

I meant that my RME card works flawlessly onn all of my VIA motherboards. MOTU however, that's a different story.

I find it interesting that people keep spreading the FUD about VIA. Clearly they have no current experience with the chipsets.
