VF80 or MR8

The thing is, recording is a never-ending process...you're always wanting/needing that other piece of gear to improve your sound. So I figure it's best to spend less on the recorder itself, which will likely end up being just that - only a recorder - and save some money to spend on other gear.

That's exactly how I feel about this debate. Of course the price difference isn't so big anymore (a couple of months ago it was $499 for the VF80) which just makes the decision all the more difficult. Use the $100 towards a preamp like the Studio Projects VTB 1, which is now going for $130. Wether you get the MR8 or the VF80, what will happen is that you will outgrow it very soon.

I don't think I'm in any danger of outgrowing the MR8 so much as outgrowing my room.....it now needs to be more like a studio. So here goes more money!!!!

Gospel,
I want the convience of recording on the Fostex. No boot up and all the other problems with the computer that I encounter from time to time.

After I get what I want , I thenwant to do a CD. I have a CD burner on my computer. I can get the VF80 for $399 without the CD. With the CD it is $599.

I hope this makes sense to everyone. I hope I'm not being stupid here. I've heard comments about getting an idea and turning the digital recorder on and recording pronto. This seems much more convient to me than waiting for the computer to jump start each time.

Computer software to me can be a hassle sometimes. I looked at the manual for the VH80 and I think I could learn it a 100 times quicker than computer recording software.

It makes a lot of sense to me that you would want to have a separate unit from a computer. Either that, or buy a whole separate computer just for recording. Of course with a stand-alone unit you get portability.

I still like the VF80 for a number of reasons, but if going into the computer quickly from the Fostex is key, then perhaps the MR8 is what you need.

I hear you man, that little home studio you dreamed about soon starts to expand. I really going to go all computer at some point. That should hopefully keep down all the peripheral equipment, although, I'm starting to dream about a vocal booth.......thank god I'm not recording drums.

I have a 15'x17' room in my basement that I am slowly but surely emptying out items that have been stored there and getting it ready for a home studio. I've already took care of the walls with extra thick insulation and sheathing in place of sheetrock that really deadens the sound. Now if I just had some money to buy more stuff.

I feel your pain......My "studio" used to be a shop where I worked on guns. I have this great corner that would be ideal for a vocal booth, unfortunately there's a milling machine there! I'd sell it, but it would take three men and a horse to get it out of there. I don't have any aspirations to go 100% computer though....I really enjoy the MR8, and though I am fighting the fact that I swore not to upgrade the card...I may just go ahead and do it.

VF-80

Truth be told, I am satisfied with my VF-80. I had some issues in the beginning...but I still have recorded about 25 songs on it. I am able to burn a cd and transfer over to my PC that way or I can do the other thing via USP...which I haven't even thought of messing with. I recommend getting a nice mastering software for you PC though...you are kinda limited in the mastering area anyway with the machine.
I am sure you will be much more lucky with yours...every piece of machinery I buy new craps out on me....you'll be happy with the VF-80.

First the card and then....................we're in the twilight zone my friend. I say it's best to start researching your audio only computer now. :)

I almost built an audio only computer before I bought the MR8. Problem is I just don't have the patience to go through the learning thing again....that would be like starting from scratch again. Soundcards, light pipes, whatnot.....I don't know from that stuff. Until November, I was in the 16th century with my P1 slowmobile, and then when I started recording again...I had no idea this stuff even existed! Digital 8 track for $300? Back when I quit playin, this digital stuff was still kinda new. A machine like this would have probably cost $20,000. I thought it was cool when they walked on the moon too!

So, bd....

I've been wondering - was the T-rex really a fearsome predator like they say? Or was it just a lazy scavenger?

Yeah, bdbuck. Tell us about the T-rex. haha!!

I did a lot of research on building a computer that I would record on and just the soundcard alone cost as much as a MR-8. Besides, I couldn't even get my monitors hooked up without you guy's help, much less build a computer.

$240 MR-8!!!

There's a "scratch and dent" MR-8 on Musicians Friend RIGHT NOW! If you're lucky you can snatch it up before someone else does, for only $239.99! I was lucky enough to get one of these units. There was absolutely nothing wrong with it, other than that it didn't come in the original box...that was it! You can't go wrong for $240!

I have to say, I got a good laugh out of it myself. That's what I love about these forums, musicians can be really funny people.
As far as the computer is concerned, I think we will all eventually be recording into them at some point. It's just a matter of time. Right now they are still a pain to use, and like you say, the learning curve is substantial, not exactly plug and play.

If your ISP is like mine I have to go over there myself sometimes and kick the mules to get them going again.

I've got AOL and it would work fine provided I had enough friggin memory to run it!!!

So I had to get 256 more hamsters!!! 140.00 bucks, what a rip off...but Gateway asserts that I need a Low Density 256MB and I can't find that anywhere retail.
