I am goint to take a whirl at recording my daughter's violin playing.

I am guessing that my MXL V93M (aka 2003) might do a good job. Do any of you others have experience with this combination?

Then I am considering positioning, particularly since the condenser is a big thing and I do not want to get in the way, either actually or psychologically, of her bowing.

Finally do you think that there would be any point in stereo miking this? If so where would you put the second mic?

I don't know that I would want to hear that combination. :D

Usually, for a violin, you want something intentionally dark or at the very least something neutral that isn't going to accentuate the high frequencies. This is why ribbon mics are the most common in this application.

I'm familiar with the v93 . . . I owned it for a while, and honestly, it's the last thing I'd pull out on something like a violin. It's a very bright-sounding mic. Not necessarily bad, mind, you. On the right source, it's a fine mic . . . but on the wrong source, you'd better get out the aspirin. :D

Just thought I'd warn you.

depends also on the violin.

violins are quite difficult to record well. i have good resultswith some cheaper mics and also expensive. if the violin has a nice open natural sound it should sound good even on a diy microphone. tapeop have an article on building a mic for 20 bucks using a panasonic capsule. if this doesnt work might i suggest renting a good ribbon like a beyer ? i might also suggest you try one of the CAD mics. i have not had a lot of experience with them but friends are happy. but you might not be. another alternative is a crown top of the line PZM might work.

Any suggestions on the positioning/number of mics points?
