The creative soundblaster live ! AND Live! Value card has an optical digital upgrade called the Optical Digital I/O2 . It has optical ports the same as the V-16's and takes a standard TOSLINK cable. Mine was Radio Shack # 15-1580 and cost $24.95. for a 3 foot cable.($7.00 on e-bay for a 6 foot). I just hit play on the V-16 and adjusted the 8 tracks of my song. The creative mixer and recorder have selections to choose s/pdif as the input source. I hit record at the song beginning and stop when it was over and was told that there were many tracks and asked if I wanted them made to stereo on tracks 1 and 2 ? I selected yes and a two track wave file was made. Easy. Now I have to see how to make 8 individual tracks sync.
I didn't need to select anything on the v-16 to export. The light in the back jack can be seen whenever the v-16 plays.

Yee Hah ! Jim

PS. If you have recorded individual tracks and sync them let us know how its done .

how many tracks can a wave file have ? an update...

I am able to create a wave file with 8 tracks... or I should say from 8 tracks on my v-16 .If I pan right or left the wave file also will do the same... It is my multi-track recording software Powertracks pro audio that recognizes the wave file is made of many tracks. It asks if it should convert the wave file to two tracks or a single mono track ... hmmmm, is there recording software that will recognize a wave file consisting of 8 tracks or more ? Or an upgrade ? I'm using power tracks 6.0 now but was going to upgrade to make use of diirect-x pluggins. I'll let you know whats happening. Again, Jim

yeah, i have the soundblaster live w/ add-on digital card.... i record into the card via optical cable ....thats seems to be the best way to do things..... www.mp3.com/OriginalOrganism .... all my songs are done this way

More details on transferring files with ADAT?

Could someone provide more details about transferring "programs" form the VF-16 to a computer using ADAT?J. Corliss mentions pressing Play on the VF-16 and then Record. Does he mean Record in the software?

Trying to do this with my setup, using a Terratec EWS 88D with lightpipeADAT, I get no sound at all coming into the computer. I've checked all the drivers, the cables, and told the software (Samplitude) to bring the data in through the soundcard's SPDIF driver, but nothing happens.

Any suggestions?

Let's see if this helps, SPDIF is what I use.... it is a stereo digital signal... I hit record on my computer software with spdif in on the soundcard selected.... you dont have to tell the fostex to export in any format.... when the fostex plays the light is on (look in the port. ).... Now if you want to export to ADAT you tell the fostex to do so.... it sends 8 tracks at a time... you have to have something which will accept ADAT, which I do not.

hore this helps you figure things out... more help at vf16.com

God bless you ! Jim

transferring tracks via ADAT

jake:

Make sure that the Fostex is setup to transfer the 8 tracks via lightpipe.

Go into "setup" on the VF16, and make sure digital out is set to ADAT.

Also, you will not be able to send tracks 1-8 out via lightpipe, unless you "track exchange" them to 9-16. The manual explains how to do this.

A little planning ahead can avoid this. i usually record stuff I know i'll send to the computer to tracks 9-16, dump them in, edit them, and then transfer them back. This way i can record addtional tracks to 1-8.

I also sync my VF16 via midi to SONAR XL . I'm positive that other software allows you to do this. Just make sure that your frame rates match, and the midi cables are hooked up properly!

I'd be glad to assist you in any way I can.

Tony

A wave file is either stereo or mono. Most programs will let you split a stereo file into 2 mono files.

I sync my FD8 to my pc all the time using both digital and analog audio signals via midi. It's just a matter of setting your midi settings on whether the pc will slave or master and same for your hd recorder. Also, make sure that your frame rates are the same and that you have specified the proper offset. My FD8 defaults to some minus number and then I have to adjust either in my audio programs or on the FD8. Either way, it works like a charm.
