using computer speakers for 4-track machine

Has anyone done this? I'm thinking of using computer speakers for near-field monitors on my 4-track. This way, I only spend $30, rather than buy a speaker amp and real speakers.

Better than headphones?

What do you think?

I have tried that out for curiosity and the sound was quite poor.

Maybe if you spen a lot of money and get top of the line computer speakers with subwoofer (not that expensive compared to stereo gear) but still the sound will be inferior to similarly priced headphones.

$100 will get one so-so speakers
$100 will get one great headphones.

$200 will get one ok speakers
$200 will get one fantastic headphones.

You obviously already have a computer, have you experimented with using the speakers that came with it?

I have a set of Boston Acoustics PC speakers with a small subwoofer that cost around a hundred bucks... It is (they are) a more usefull monitoring source than my Event 20/20P's($450)... Unless you listen to music through tweeters only...
It is my (questionable) opinion that one needs a subwoofer to properly mix modern music... I shoulda went with the Tria...
