I have the shure pg drum package, and i'm upgrading my snare, and tom mic's to shure sm57's. That leaves kick and OH's i was looking at a AKG D112 for kik and have no clue regarding OH mic's.

The shure KSM27 sounds bland and I know it depends on your voice but I'm very fond of the kurt cobain quiet and loud dyanmics and have a very male mid rangy voice i've read the rode nt1a was good.

I have a Focusrite 428 ISA 4 channel preamp with the 8 channel a/d converter card, with the digi 002 running pro tools LE 8 on a intel imac and maxtor one touch II external drive.

I was thinking maybe i could keep the shure pg81's for OH's and get the 3 SM57's and keep the PG52 for kik which sucks but was hoping to fix issues in EQ III. Or should i get the AKG D112 and a KSM44 for vox. As you can see i'm confused lol.

I am using a mac based PT/002 setup with focusrite pres. I also have a PG 52 and a D112. You can't go wrong with the D112 it's a definite upgrade.

I have done a comparison test with the NT1a and the Rode K2. NT1a was very sensitive to room noise and was bright and up front, a little boomy. The K2 seemed to need a hotter signal but handled higher spls better and sounded a lot cleaner without much fuss. The one plus of the NT1a is that it's an out of the box cut through the mix vocal mic.

Depending on the level of dynamics and detail the pg81s should do pretty good for rock and compressed mixes. Just going to sm81s is an improvement but watch the price soar compared to the pg81s. Look into getting some cheap ribbon mics for overheads (NADY). There are plenty of upgrades for lesser expensive ones or you can get a decent pair for less than 2 sm81s and have some diversity on your mic shelf.

Hope this helps:)

A ksm32 and the drum set mics with all SM57s and a beta 52 is a step up you can bet is being used in pro studios arround the globe.

Yeah thanks u guys, I'm getting the (3) SM57's and the akg D112, oh I forgot to mention I have snare, Kik, both OH's on the focusrite pre. Then I have both toms which will end up being SM 57's, a second snare mic'd from the bottom, now should i use my ksm27 or the left over pg56 from the mic pkg.

Also hi-hats which could really use the ksm27, and these four mic's are going into the presonus digimax fs and going into the focusrite via (4) 1/2 - xlr cables and going through some really good a/d conversion via the focusrite 8 channel 828 a/d card into the digi 002.

Now I bought the presonus 4 yr's ago thinking it was a solution to all my problems boy was I wrong, but the pre's on it are class A and very discrete and should do the job with a good a/d converter.

Now the Rode nt1a sounds like a good buy for the price and quality but would it be wiser to invest in the KSM44 which retails at almost $800.00 CAD or i'll be wasting money and just get the Rode.

And thanks you guys I never really get to talk tech with anyone I've been boring my old lady of late since I got my focusrite I can't shut up about recording equipment.

The KSM32...and the C214 are both at a nice $400-600 price range...half for used...and are the best values for people like us.
