Using a Delay in Sonar

I find it challanging to use a delay effect. Someone (probably Sonusman) wrote about adding a delay so and so seconds for a vocal or acoustic guitar to make it thick. What particular delay plugins (since Sonar has many and I've downloaded a couple of them too) would be easy to learn and operate, like adding a delay a milisecond or two long. The presets are good but they're too obvious. I kinda sense the theory behind adding the effect which is barly noticable, but it's tough to actually do it. Know what I mean :-) Basic tips/guide would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

I highly recommend the dB-T Tempo Delay. It's free, and can be sync.'ed to the songs tempo, that makes it so easy to use... It comes in a package of 5 plugins, but the Delay is the only free one. Of course, you can choose not to install the others during installation...

You can find it here.

Yeah - that dB delay is a good one. If you want to spend a bit, UltraFunk fx:delay is good, if you want to spend a lot, Lexicon PSP42. OhmBoyz is a totally nuts delay effect, but it's not exactly uh...standard.

I'm not exactly sure of the situation, but I find that some DX effects you have to set tempo manually. I usually find better performance by going VST via the adapter and configuring as a DXi to get it to sync up with Sonar. Works for OhmBoyz and some others.

Lastnight I experimented on dB ProDelay and got it work. (I started with dB ProDelaylite at first since it has less "knobs" to tweak) NOW the vocal is as thick as I want it to be and it doen't sound like singing through a pipe anymore and is no longer verticle at death center either. My recording will never be the same again. :-) Thanks Moskus and Steve...

Steve, can you elaborate a little more. In what sense are other FX delay plugins you mentioned better?

Moskus, what's the defferent between ProDelay and Tempo delay though?

I really don't know... I just use the Tempo Delay... ;)

4ever,

Well, I wouldn't *necessarily* say the one's I mentioned were better, just uh...different.

The Lexicon PSP42 is an emulation of a famous hardware delay and sounds amazing. Tape delay effects, very warm, sounds great on vocals.

fx:delay has nice filters and diffusion to add some variance.

ohmboyz is completely insane - 4 predelays, 2 delay lines and 39 LFOs. I use it all the time.

As you can tell, I love delays. I like to have multitaps pinging all over the place. If you just want to add some delay to the odd vocal you can probably get away with the cakewalk ones or the db or some chorus. If you're interested I think there are demos available of all of those mentioned above.

I can't help with the 'prodelay' difference either, as I just use the db tempo delay also.
